Photos and Description of the Alentejo Litoral holiday farmhouse Located very close to the River Mira in The Southwest Alentejo Natural Park

This unique place is situated in a private property of 30ha, and distance 1,5km from the local small Village of Troviscais. The place is very peaceful and bucolic and is surrounded by nature where you can find among other the local trees like the arbutus tree and the typical tree of the Alentejo, the cork tree. Sometimes you can hear the fox and sense the wild boar particularly at night. It´s also possible to observe the local country side activities, like the pasture of the cattle or wheat and corn harvesting from the fields. Other activities like bird watching, horse riding, canoeing or simply walk to River (15 minutes walk), or a bathe there, are the big attractions of the house location. In alternative you can always drive (20 minutes) to the wonderful beaches along the coast. The house is full equipped and has place for 5 people. More information can be given through the web site. The place 'Casas da Cerca', is situated in the Alentejo (South of Portugal) in the 'Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park', on the part facing west, confined by the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape near the seaside is covered by scarped cliffs. Towards the inner land we approach the typical Alentejo landscape of the plains, alternated with green valleys, given very particular characteristics to this part of the Alentejo - 'A Different Alentejo'. 'Casas da Cerca' is situated 15minutes walk from the River Mira and 2km from the small village of Troviscais. It also distance approximately 8km of S. Luís, the nearest village, 15km of Odemira, and 22km of Vila Nova de Milfontes, the touristic village by the sea. 'Casas da Cerca' are two ancient earth constructions. Additional information about rental rates

  • The daily rates for the house are: 150 Euros per night on high season and 120 Euros per night on low season. High season goes from the 15th June to 15th of September, also in the periods of Christmas and New Year, from the 15th of December to the 7th of January and also in the periods of Carnival and Easter and long official weekends.
    Because this periods have flexible dates, the information is given each year.
    The rates for 1 week are: 910 Euros in High Season and 700 Euros in Low Season. The rates for two weeks are: 1680 Euros in High Season and 1260 Euros in Low Season.
    For booking, a deposit of 20% of the total cost must be granted with one month in advance. Meals are not included in the rates. Included in the rates are the cleaning of the house and the changing of the bed sheets, provided once or twice a week according to the length of the staying.
    There is no safe box in the house and renters are responsible for the security of there own personal belongings.

  • The bath room has a toilet a bath with a shower and a wash-basin. It´s an internal bath room, with natural light from the roof. The exhaustion process is a natural one.

  • The house is compose by a bed room, with a double bed of 140 cm width. In the living room there´s a sofa bed with a bed of 135cm width. An extra single bed of 95cm is provided. A cradle can also be provided. The living room where the sofa bed is, is provided with a fire place, television and DVD. Also there is a screen to make more private spaces inside the living room. Electric heaters are also provided in winter time. Both rooms, living room and bed room are inter-connected, by a large door, so that together, they can be used an individual bigger space. The living room gives access to two open air patios.

Notes: The place is not served with telephone lines, but some times indoors and outdoors a mobile phone may be used. The roads that lead to Casas da Cerca are dirt roads, so city cars should drive slowly. Close to the house is a small tank which used to serve in old times, as a water reservoir for irrigation of the meadow, and that suits today as a recreation tank. Specially in summer time, the mosquitoes 'attack' generally early in the morning, and in the evening before dark. In winter time early in the morning, can be very cold outside because of the frost, but becomes normal again as the hours go by. The house has two floors so infirm must be aware of this fact. 'Casas da Cerca' is part of a bigger property of 30ha, called 'Monte Novo dos Troviscais', so the private outdoor space around, is plenty. Also from 'Casas da Cerca' one can go to the River Mira, which is probably the only non polluted river in Europe, and take a bathe there. The River distance 15 minutes walk from the house.

Birdwatching, canoeing, horse riding: Apart from the local countryside activities, as the local community is still very active, one can experiment activities such as birdwatching, canoeing, horse riding, skiing or walks along the river, or simply doing nothing and enjoying nature. In the close touristic Village of Vila Nova de Milfontes, one can also ski either in the Atlantic or in the river Mira.

Hard to find charming house, a bit expensive

The location was hard to find and a meeting place in Troviscais would have been nice. The maps provided were not very useful.

The house is very nicely redone and is great for a couple or a couple with young children. The location is very quiet and peaceful, but you have to drive a fair bit to explore the region. a 20 minutes drive is required to get groceries and 40 minutes drive to see the beaches in Vila Nova de Milfontes. The house itself is in a small valley and has no real views.

Overall the cost was a fair bit too high for the location/ facilities compared to other area in Portugal. This house in another location (up the hill) would be a better rating!
Recommended for:  Families with Young Children, Adventure Seekers
Owner's Response: Alentejo is considered to be one of the most (if not the most) uninhabitable region in Europe (less people per km2).

One of the main characteristics of the Alentejo, and what makes it so special, is precisely being uninhabitable and the distances between places and facilities.

“Casas da Cerca, Nature Tourism”, fit those characteristics fully.

One can not have the city in the country side and vice versa, especially when we are talking about a House that is situated in Alentejo as described above, in a Natural Park and in one of its most protected areas, very close to the river (to be know as one of the few non polluted in Europe), and surrounded by the best panoplies of habitats that nature can give you.

“Casas da Cerca, Nature Tourism”, is situated in a confined spot of a 30ha property. One can have a lot of nice views either in Casas da Cerca itself, or just by walking along from the House to the River (15 minutes walk).

It's very easy to get to Troviscais, if either you have a Map of Portugal, or if you follow the descriptions on Casas da Cerca Web Site. There is a meeting point in Troviscais.

Customers are always told, by email, to call the House Owner, the sooner they arrive in the Village, so that they can be guided to “Casas da Cerca”.

In the House there is all kind of maps explaining ways to take you to some of the interesting and useful places around.

There are two Cafes and a small Grocery in the Village of Troviscais (1,5Km from Casas da Cerca).

The prices are according to the specificity of the place and they fit the average prices practice by other Tourism in the region.

The House Owner lives in the place and is always available for guidance to customers.
