Agde - an ancient city with over 2,000 years of history, nestling on the river Herault; canal du Midi and 4km from the beautiful golden sandy beaches of the Mediterranean. The beautiful cities of Montpellier, Nimes and Beziers are all within easy reach by car or train and the medieval citadel of Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site;Avignan the city of the Popes are just a one hour drive away. Cap d'Agde, a modern resort, with Aqualand Water Park, nightclubs; naturist beach and ports with posh yachts offers an alternative entertainment. The Spanish border, an hour and a half drive away, can be reached by motorway or the breathtaking corniche route from Collioure. National Parks, clean free flowing rivers, gorges, lakes, lagoons and mountains, nature reserves compete for your attention with the best beaches on France’s Mediterranean coastline. At the centre of the world’s largest wine producing region famed for its seafood.
Accessibility: There are regular Ryanair flights from London/Stansted (which has a fast direct rail connection to London Liverpool Street Station) to Montpellier, Nimes, Carcassonne and Perpignan. All these cities have good rail connections direct to Agde, and our house is a short taxi run from Agde Station. Alternatively car hire can be arranged when booking your flight for collection from the airport on your arrival in France. Nearest Motorway connection at Bessan 6km away.
During the summer the town is bustling with entertainment. There is something for every taste. Art exhibitions, classical music in the Cathedral, a strolling jazz band, jousting on the river Herault, an amazing firework display on Friday evenings, not to mention a historic tourist walk through the narrow cobbled streets of the old city. Restaurants are plentiful - If you prefer to 'eat in' the local produce is excellent in the shops but do try the Thursday market which starts early, but is gone by midday!
For a change of scenery it is just a short drive, or a boat trip, to Cap d'Agde which is a modern resort with night clubs, posh yachts and trendy bars. For culture, the city of Beziers, about 30km from Agde, visit the Opidium, site of a Roman Town, to the west of the city. And on the way back to Agde stop at the Nine Locks on the Canal du Midi. Perpignan, Toulouse and Carcassonne need an early start but can be reached and explored in a day using the motorway one way and perhaps the country road on return, to explore the Cathar region. To the east, the beautiful cities of Montpellier and Nimes. And Spain is just a one and a half hour drive away.
