This modern second floor apartment is located in the small seaside town of Alen Mak which adjoins the southern end of Golden Sands. Alen Mak has the advantage of being a real town rather than a resort like Golden Sands, Albena and Sunny Beach. The community consists of a mixture of local and international residents. This means that even if you visit out of season, you wont find a deserted, closed resort but a home away from home. The apartment has two bedrooms, a bathroom and a main living area which includes the kitchen and dining area. Doors lead from each room to the long 10 metre balcony where you can spend the evening admiring the view with a nice bottle of Bulgarian wine or a glass of Rakia. The apartment has air conditioning in the two main rooms. The air conditioning doubles as heating if you want to visit in the winter. Facilities include a large pool , a Jacuzzi, sauna and a gym. It is a small development, which makes it a more relaxed and comfortable place to visit.

It is the perfect location to appreciate the very best that Bulgaria's warm climate can bring. Not just sunshine and beautiful beaches within walking distance, but gourmet food and wine, golf, opera, spas and museums all less than half an hour away. The beach at Alen Mak is a long stretch of golden sand lined with restaurants and bars. The beach is a local secret and therefore much less crowded that Golden Sands in the next bay. If you want to join in the action, the well known resort of Golden Sands is only five-minutes away by car, 15-20 minutes walk. It offers a full range of tourist facilities including high quality international restaurants, casinos and night clubs. The cosmopolitan town of Varna is a short car journey or bus ride away.

Great modern apartment in quiet peaceful location

We stayed at the Lighthouse apartments in August 2009. For a family with two children (7 & 10) it was a perfect size. We were welcomed and helped out on several occasions by our friendly British neighbours. The apartment is reasonably spacious with two good sized bedrooms. The kitchen facilities were easily sufficient for full self catering, though with the many reasonable restaurants nearby we didn't bother too much. There are 3 mini markets within 5 minutes walk which can provide the daily necessities for lunch and breakfast. For a larger shop there are shopping malls such as Picadilly Park a bus ride or 15 minute car journey away. In this local area there isn't much English spoken, though this wasn't a great problem. I got by with my collection of Bulgarian greetings and expressive hand gestures.

The local beach at Alen Mak was good though very busy at weekends when locals come to the beach. There is an area with parasols and loungers where you will pay about 21 leva (£10.50). We used the free area further down the beach. You can buy a parasol for £5-10 from a nearby shop. The sea can get rough at time, which can be fun but a challenge for smaller kids.

We tried the Riviera Resort park near Golden Sands which is free to enter though (like most beaches) will charge you 19 leva (£9.50) for beds and parasols. I think you can also take your own though. A pleasant beach with nice gardens but beware the restaurants! We got charged 70 leva (£35) for chicken burgers chips and salad plus drinks! They will also charge if your kids use the leisure pools nearby. I gather this is typical of the Golden Sands area to greater or lesser degrees.

Local roads are somewhat chaotic with drivers swerving around potholes in the road. You need to keep alert, especially with children. Taxi drivers in particular manage to reach impressive speeds through these pothole chicanes.

Overall a relaxing holiday. Great apartment, pool and facilities. Nearby beach pretty good more picturesque beach (riviera) within 25 mins walk. Would definitely go back. Thanks!

Lighthouse apartments

A good place to do nothing but sit by the pool and go down the hill to nearby bars & restaurants. Alternatively, it's a good location to go on excursions up & down the coast - Valentin's minibus (office halfway down the hill to Alen Mak) is good value. Better still, hire a car for a few days, get a map from a petrol station and see things at your own pace. (Make sure you give very clear instructions to the car hire firm about how to find the apartments if you want the car delivered!) Highly recommended are the Kaliaki peninsular and the gardens at Balchik, Nesebar, Sosopol, the stone forest (petrified trees) north of Varna, and the ancient capital Veliko Tarnovo in Central Bulgaria. Then when you return in the evening, you can relax in the illuminated pool, which is almost certainly empty at that hour, or go down to the sauna & jacuzzi room.

Apartment 12, Lighthouse Apartments

We drove to the apartment from Sofia and once we had left Sofia had no difficulty in finding the apartment. We were greeted by the English residents who were extremely helpful during the whole of our stay. The property was clean and well maintained, with a very good washing machine and fridge. The swimming pool is excellent, the gym facilities look good but we didn't use them. We received good customer service from the owner. We have certainly recommended this apartment to friends and relatives. We found all the local restaurants we visited served very good food at reasonable prices. In fact during our whole stay in Bulgaria we didn't have a bad meal, although the Classic Fish Restaurant was a disappointment. Balcik was probably our favourite place to visit, and eating at the Francis Drake Hotel's restaurant very good, although the Box Tree, previously the Bunker was also very good although on the pricey side for Bulgaria. We found the walk back from the beach and up to the bars and restaurants by the university a bit tiring, but then we are 70 and 71 respectively!

A really nice place

Hi, we stayed for 10 days during August last year, we liked it so much that we've just booked again for this year, though with friends and not the kids!!

We organised a collection from the airport via the owner which I'm sure saved us alot of time and money. Secondly, the people that met us were permamant residents in the apartment block so they were able to give us lots of good information and advice.

The apartment itself was spacious and clean. The people that collected us from the airport also let us into the apartment and showed us around.

The apartment building was clean and very quiet. We were regularly the only people by the pool. There was a distinct lack of sunbeds around the pool though having spoken to the owner this has now been rectified.

You will pass several reasonable restaurants and bars on the walk down to the beach. We found the two on the beach itself very pleasant on quite reasonably priced.

If you are staying for more than a week I recommend that you hire a car, we did this for the middle 5 days of our trip, the details were in the information that the owner gave us. With the car we drove up the coast to Balchik and Kaliakra, which was really nice. We also drove south of Varna towards Burgas, Nessebar is worth a visit, though I would avoid Sunny Beach, it was heaving and you have to pay to park anywhere near it.

Varna is well worth the visit, you can take the bus from the top of the hill about 10 minutes walk from the apartment, we asked one of the residents for directions, they also had a timetable, about every 20 minutes I think and it only took 20 minutes to get there.

So, would I recommend this to anyone else. Thats a yes, as we are going again this year with some friends.

Excellent value for families, friends or couples

We visited recently and had a great time. The best featureds about this place are:

big balcony with great views of the sea
lots of space and good apartment facilities
nice pool
nice wine

It is not far from Varna which is a nice city with a European feel and plenty of shopping opportunities and will also satisfy people who like clubbing and going out in the evenings. Golden Sands is a nearby seaside resort with all the facilities one would need. However we mostly enjoyed the quietness of the beach in Alan Mak and the great use of pool. My 3 year old really nejoyed it as there is also a little pool section for children. There are longe beds around the pool and the place feels safe and secure. The food in restaurants is incredably cheap and there si plenty places to choose from and the menu is always varied. I would recommend grilled meat, seafood and salads especially. We enjoyed our stay and hope to go again.
