Calypso

It was our first Caribbean holiday and we weren't disappointed with Calypso. It's an excellent base to see the island. The house is well equipped and a nice touch is that beach towels are provided. The house is kept very clean by the lovely Housekeeper, Orethia. It was very hot day and night - thank goodness for the air con in the bedrooms, the cooling breeze, and the occasional rain shower. I can honestly say that we have never felt so welcome in a foreign country. The Bajans are lovely people; so warm and helpful. Whenever we stopped to check a map, someone coming the opposite way stopped to ask if we were okay and point us in the right direction. Calypso is in a lovely location. A short walk takes you to Enterprise Beach where there is plenty of shade if needed. We really enjoyed watching the hummingbirds and yellow breasts in Calypso's small garden and listening to the Whistling Tree Frogs. We visited most of the island and had some lovely days out. Our particular favourites were Hunte’s Garden (Anthony makes a mean rum punch!) and St Nicholas Abbey. We recommend a day trip with Geoffrey on his catamaran. He knew we weren't confident swimmers and really looked after us. Snorkelling with turtles and reef fish was amazing. The trip included a good buffet lunch at Fisherman's Pub in Speightstown and, yes, rum punch! Several times afterwards we snorkelled at Folkestone Bay. It's perfect for beginners - you don’t have to go too far out to see and feed the fish (they're partial to wholemeal bread!). For cheap eating out we recommend the famous Friday Fish Fry in Oistins - only a 10 mins walk past Enterprise Beach and you can stop and watch locals playing dominos on the way. We ate at Pat's Place twice and Mo's - the fish and rice with peas is excellent. The local beer, Banks, is very good. There are also some very good restaurants locally. The visitors book at Calypos contains many recommendations - including ours - for places to eat and places to visit. Calypso's owner Chris was extremely helpful (and patient!) in answering our many queries before our stay. There's plenty of information and lots of leaflets in the house to ensure that visitors get the best from their stay. Many visitors have recommended happy hour cocktails at the nearby hotel, Little Arches, watching the sun go down; however, our preference was to sit on Enterprise Beach drinking rum punch watching the sun go down with the locals. Wonderful!! Enjoy. We did. Fran & Mike

We were delighted to have you as guests in our house and would love you to consider our house if you get a chance to go to Barbados again ;-)
