Historical
MONTFERRAND, the Middle Ages village is located on the top of a 'Pays Cathare''s hill in the heartland of Lauragais. The Seuil de Naurouze a natural site of water-sharing supplying the Canal du Midi is nearby. In 1666, Pierre-Paul Riquet the Canal du Midi originator figured to invent a basin equipped with a dam at Saint-Ferréol in order to collect and stock Montagne Noire's water and lead it to natural division point between Mediterranean sea and Atlantic ocean: from Naurouze to Montferrand. Nowadays, Lauragais, this true 'never-never land' enriched since the 17th century by the pastel's culture, turned to cereal growing. Castelnaudary is Lauragais capital. It is famous for its Cassoulet and huge Canal du Midi's basin. The close by city of Carcassonne a medieval city was classified World Inheritance of UNESCO.
