Local Activities/Amenities/Road Trips: Castletownbere, our local town, is a picturesque fishing port - from which there is also leisure deep sea fishing. There is horse riding and a riding school 6 miles away in Urhan (past Eyeries Village). There are unique gardens in two picturesque locations, both by the seaside - Lauragh, Co. Kerry, 6 miles away (at Derreen Gardens) and in Glengarriff, Co. Cork, 25 miles away (in Garnish Island). Boat trips, sailing, canoeing/kayaking and other water sports are at Star Outdoors 15 miles away at Dowros, Co Kerry, on the Kenmare road (near Kenmare) - overlooking the shorefront is a pub and restaurant at this facility also. 15 miles to the West Cork Sailing & Powerboat Center in Adrigole, Co. Cork. There are canoes and kayacks at this Center as well. In Adrigole there is also a Waterfall - at the foot of Hungry Hill. Allihies, 15 miles away has a beach and arts & crafts. At the tip of the Peninsula is historic Dursey Island at 20 miles and is reachable by cable car.
There is also the Annual Eyeries Family Festival that takes place in mid July, as well as the Annual Allihies Festival in mid August - which includes horse racing, sports competitions, and music. 40 miles to Killarney National Park & Lakes/Muckross House & Gardens in Co. Kerry. Historic Bantry House & Gardens in Bantry, Co. Cork is 38 miles away. Another historic location is Bere Island, which can be reached by ferry from Castletownbere or the ferry from Furious Pier about 3 miles east of the Town.
Restaurants/Cafes/Shops: In addition to the restaurant and the cafe/deli in Ardgroom Village, there is also a restaurant in Eyeries Village 5 miles away - on the road to Castletownbere. Kenmare, Co Kerry, 20 miles away has many restaurants and cafes. Catletownbere also has some restaurants, cafes, and several pubs that serve food, including the historic McCarthy's Bar. Castletownbere has a bank, Tourist Office, supermarket (with ATM), fish shop, and many other shops.
