Canico is a short drive from some of Madeira's main attractions. To the west Funchal, the capital is renown for its parks, gardens and restaurants; in particular the springtime flower festival is beautiful. Close is Monte with its church and the start for the famous 'Toboggan Run'. To the north lay the mountains, higher and more rugged than those of Scotland they offer a stunning view from almost every turn. Levada Walks are a favourite to get away and see the island from above. The North Coast around Santana is where you'll find the traditional quaint, straw-thatched cottages. Continue east to Sao Lourenco where the island changes to an almost lunar landscape, this is a Nature Reserve great place to walk with views of bothe the north and south coasts!

Canico Plaza Apartment - highly recommended

JM Bournemouth Dorset UK
Review Submitted: December 20, 2007 Date of Stay: October 2007
We first stayed here with our 10 year old girl in April 2007 and enjoyed the apartment and the area immensely. We’d stayed in Funchal before but wanted somewhere less like home and this apartment in Canico was perfect. In fact we liked it so much we returned with friends in October.
The property is light, spacious, clean and pleasantly decorated having a large dining/social area and 2 double bedrooms, one en-suite. The kitchen has it all and copes easily with 4 adults. Storage for clothes etc is brilliant. The TV is small but it works, but we didn’t go on holiday to watch tv, in fact we didn’t miss it at all! Breakfast on the balcony is great, but for proper meals the dining area is perfect. The furniture is much better than the stuff you normally find in SC apartments and there are plenty of books to read if you feel the need. There are good views from this 3rd floor apartment and a lift if you don’t like stairs. The car park is under the block and is reasonably secure with electric entry and exit doors. There is also a coffee shop in the block, almost right next to the front entrance. The pool is clean and didn't irritate my eyes. Full marks all round.
The lady owner speaks good English and is very helpful. She gave us some great tips for day trips and where to eat out.
Canico centre is about 10 minutes easy walk. It has plenty of shops including a good supermarket (great wine selection and cheap too!). Our 2 favourite restaurants are Lareira and for Picanha (traditional succulent skewered steak) the Central. There’s a great fish restaurant in Reis Magos right on the beach but that is not really walk-able. In fact you may wish to eat out most of the time, it’s extraordinary value and saves time on the washing up.
We like Canico because it is not a busy town or city but it is still civilised. It’s close to the Via Rapida so Funchal and the rest of the south coast is never far away, but for us the main interest was getting into the mountains and the less developed north coast. Although public transport is very good, for complete freedom you will need a car. This eastern end of the Island has so much to offer; high mountains, stunning coasts, charming towns like Camacha and Machico and great vistas. From the Park at Santo da Sarra you can see all the way to the eastern tip, San Lorenco. So Canico is a great compromise; good road links and fairly easy access to some of the best mountain and seascapes Madeira has to offer.
In short, the apartment exceeded our expectations and proved to be the ideal base from which to explore Madeira. I would have no hesitation in recommending it, and have indeed done so to friends who have stayed there and were equally satisfied.
Owner's Response: Hi Mr JM and family

Thanks for your nice words!

Hope to see you soon in Madeira

Kind Regards
Paula

Modern apartment in Canico Madeira

S and J and Twins Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire, England
Review Submitted: November 18, 2008 Date of Stay: October 2008
We visited Madeira in October 2008 and stayed at this lovely modern & clean apartment.
We were met by the owner, who waited patiently whilst we sorted out the problematic hire car. Upon our arrival, Paula showed us around, explained how to use all the gadgets and the underground car park. The apartment was larger than average with more than enough wardrobe space in both bedrooms, and the lounge dining area was very light and spacious. the quality of the apartment shone through and there was a sea view from the balcony. Good for spotting cruise ships coming into Funchal harbour (Dont forget your binoculars!)
Having two bathrooms, is always a bonus.
The apartment is close to the village of Canico which is about a 15min walk and has a largish supermarket & two nice restaurants within sight of each other Central & Lareira, both offer a pick up & drop off service but we never used it, we preferred to walk, due to the large amount of meat you get!
If you turn left out of the apartment and go to Garajau about 2 miles, there is an excellent restaurant Touricalo (our favorite) opposite Don Pedro Hotel, which served a variety of foods with fresh vegetables and gorgeous desserts,
attached to this restaurant there was a take away section, with reasonable prices serving suckling pig, local fish, fresh cooked veg and much much more.
We visited Funchal and on a Friday, they have a very large market selling local fish, meat, fruit of every shape and size and beautiful flowers, be warned, do not buy Madeiran wine or cake from the liquour stores, its much cheaper in the supermarkets.
We visited Porto Moniz, where they have natural swimming pools, created from the lava, they are fed by the sea water but are worth a try. Also worth visiting is Calheta, where they have a man made sand beach, which is kept safe by a harbour wall. They also have a range of cafe's serving drinks & food. Madeira is a very beautiful but different island, no rowdiness at all, and at times extremely quiet. A lot of Restaurants tend to close early 11pm so dont leave it too late.
Canico is on the south of the island with ample amounts of sun and only about 20 minutes from the airport so is ideally situated, if you plan to visit the north of the island the climate is completely different most of the time under a constant cloud, worth a visit but not ideal for a long stay.
Thankyou to Paula for a warm welcome, the wine, flowers, little extras, can recommend, we will return

Lovely Apartment with Pool and Secure Parking

Mr & Mrs B C Dundee
Review Submitted: July 27, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
Lovely, spacious, clean, well maintained apartment set in a local residential area so no tourist noise. Occasional nearby cockerel annoying but got used to it. Only two of us but would easily take another two family members or another couple because of separate shower room. Valued extras - the (shared) swimming pool, the lift to the apartment and the space in secure underground car park. A hire car useful but bus to/from Funchal outside apartment. Limited local shopping but 10 min walk to supermarket offers all that is required. Good value for money. The owner is local and her communication was excellent re booking, payment and meeting us on arrival. She was also keen to know what could be improved after we returned home.

Winter holiday 2008

Finlanders Lohja, Finland
Review Submitted: July 13, 2008 Date of Stay: January 2008
We spent a week at this nice apartment in January-February 2008.
What we liked the most was the excellent possibility to use the bus for transportation. A bus stop just across the street. We didn´t want to hire a car. Madeira bus drivers are phenomenal, you´re like in a rollercoaster, but no fear they can handle it!

We also liked to stay in an apartment instead of a hotel, it was more like a "home".
We had a chance to see the Funchal Carnival which was a great event:you could almost imagine to be in Copacabana!

Paula is a great person who helps when ever help is needed.

There are many good near by restaurants with local delicacies so no need always to go further.

What we maybe missed in the apartment was more heating devices (only one) because it was, especially during the night a bit moist and chilly.

This was our second visit to Madeira and I highly can recommend Paula´s cosy apartment to all Madeira visitors.
