Modern apartment in Canico Madeira
Review Submitted: November 18, 2008
Date of Stay: October 2008
We visited Madeira in October 2008 and stayed at this lovely modern & clean apartment.
We were met by the owner, who waited patiently whilst we sorted out the problematic hire car. Upon our arrival, Paula showed us around, explained how to use all the gadgets and the underground car park. The apartment was larger than average with more than enough wardrobe space in both bedrooms, and the lounge dining area was very light and spacious. the quality of the apartment shone through and there was a sea view from the balcony. Good for spotting cruise ships coming into Funchal harbour (Dont forget your binoculars!)
Having two bathrooms, is always a bonus.
The apartment is close to the village of Canico which is about a 15min walk and has a largish supermarket & two nice restaurants within sight of each other Central & Lareira, both offer a pick up & drop off service but we never used it, we preferred to walk, due to the large amount of meat you get!
If you turn left out of the apartment and go to Garajau about 2 miles, there is an excellent restaurant Touricalo (our favorite) opposite Don Pedro Hotel, which served a variety of foods with fresh vegetables and gorgeous desserts,
attached to this restaurant there was a take away section, with reasonable prices serving suckling pig, local fish, fresh cooked veg and much much more.
We visited Funchal and on a Friday, they have a very large market selling local fish, meat, fruit of every shape and size and beautiful flowers, be warned, do not buy Madeiran wine or cake from the liquour stores, its much cheaper in the supermarkets.
We visited Porto Moniz, where they have natural swimming pools, created from the lava, they are fed by the sea water but are worth a try. Also worth visiting is Calheta, where they have a man made sand beach, which is kept safe by a harbour wall. They also have a range of cafe's serving drinks & food. Madeira is a very beautiful but different island, no rowdiness at all, and at times extremely quiet. A lot of Restaurants tend to close early 11pm so dont leave it too late.
Canico is on the south of the island with ample amounts of sun and only about 20 minutes from the airport so is ideally situated, if you plan to visit the north of the island the climate is completely different most of the time under a constant cloud, worth a visit but not ideal for a long stay.
Thankyou to Paula for a warm welcome, the wine, flowers, little extras, can recommend, we will return
