Stylish B&B, Suite and Gite on a Working Dairy Farm

A beautiful 16th century stone farmhouse, 'La Vieille Abbaye', (The Old Abbey), was originally the site chosen by local monks to build their abbey. A nearby water course prevented the completion of the project and the abbey was eventually constructed a few fields away. Now, under the ownership of French/English couple, Stephane and Kate Le Moigne, this charming property has been transformed to offer a combination of quality Bed & Breakfast, Suite and Gite of a luxurious standard on a working dairy farm. In 2008, guests will enjoy brand-new, flexible accommodation, furnished and decorated tastefully and comfortably, with an eclectic mix of English, French and Scandinavian styling. As parents of young children ourselves, we welcome families to our property, as well as individuals, couples and groups looking to explore this pretty region of Normandy, historic Caen and the Normandy Landing Beaches. The ideal place to enjoy peace and quiet, yet with plenty to do right on the doorstep!

Situated on the edge of the rural village of Barbery, we are 4km from the nearest town of Bretteville sur Laize, with its selection of shops and weekly street market. Drive for 15 minutes and you will be in beautiful Swiss Normande, with stunning scenery and charming riverside restaurants. In the other direction, we are 25 minutes drive to Caen city, where you will find a wealth of shops, architecture, culture and a buzzing nightlife. The Normandy landing beaches are accessible in around 30 minutes, as is the ferry port of Ouistreham. We are ideally placed to tour Normandy and beyond into Brittany, the Loire Valley and west to Paris.

La Vieille Abbaye is an 16thc stone farmhouse, lovingly renovated during 2007 and 2008, taking care to preserve its original character and beauty. The property now offers flexible accommodation in 'shabby chic' style , which may be booked on a B&B or self-catering basis, depending on season and party size. We offer a spacious ground-floor Suite for up to 4 guests, (may suit less mobile visitors), plus two 1st floor en suite bedrooms and two 2nd floor en suite bedrooms. Book all rooms as a self-catering gite for up to 14 guests. We are a working dairy farm, with 120 friesian cows producing milk for breakfast! We also have horses, a Shetland pony, 2 cats, various hens and a few sheep! Guests are welcome to enjoy our pretty, well-stocked English-style garden. Our enclosed, sandy-surfaced play area for children will keep the little ones amused for hours, (supervised by parents please), with its 14ft trampoline, 2 wendy houses, wooden climbing frame, swings, slide and see-saw.
