Le Belvedere, an early 19th century 'maison bourgeoise' set overlooking a tiny village, has been restored to high standards. With its 5 bedrooms and bathrooms, large living accommodation, covered terrace and 2 pools, it is ideally suited for 2 families or a large group to explore the beautiful countryside of the Lot and Dordogne. Situated 18 kms north of Cahors and 23 kms south of Gourdon, it is the perfect base from which to visit Rocamadour (a World Heritage site), St Cirq Lapopie and both the Lot and Dordogne rivers. The house is luxuriously furnished with 5 bedrooms and bathrooms and a fully equipped kitchen. Outside there is a large pool and adjacent children's pool with surrounding sun terraces, all fenced in for safety.

St Denis-Catus has a small bar and restaurant. Catus which is 4 kms by car, has all amenities including a boulangerie, small supermarket, post office, butchers plus a couple of restaurants and a tourist office and a weekly market. Just the other side of Catus is the large fishing and boating lake. It is surrounded by woods and there are also tennis courts, a children's play area, pedaloes and a restaurant overlooking the lake. The department of the Lot is full of interesting villages and beautiful countryside. Visit the chateaux which produce the famous 'black' Cahors wine, canoe on the Lot river and admire the fantastic limestone cliffs along the way, take a trip down into the caves of Gouffre de Padirac or Pech Merle with its prehistoric paintings or buy the local produce of foie gras, walnuts or an abundance of fruit and vegetables at one of the weekly bustling markets. The cliff-top villages of Rocamadour and St Cirq Lapopie are within easy reach as is the stunning Dordogne river.

Notes: Freesat tv, books, games and plenty of DVDs available. There is also a quiet sitting area between bedrooms 1 and 2 with sofa. There is a large table on the covered terrace for outside dining. In the garden there is a children's play area with swings, slide and climbing frame and a ping pong table. A cot and highchair are also available if required.

History: Known locally as 'le Chateau', Le Belvédère was built in 1836 for the local notaire. With its high ceilings, stone walls, original wooden flooring and two storey high exterior arches, it is certainly an impressive building. During the Second World War, it was requisitoned by the Germans from the Princesse de Bourbon. The house stretches over five floors and when the current owners bought it in 2000, they set about renovating the lower two floors to provide luxurious gite accommodation. The three other floors are slowly undergoing renovation albeit out of the rental season.

The Little Extras: To make your holiday seem more like home from home, we provide candles and tealights, fresh flowers, a selection of cookery books based on French cookery and beds of fresh herbs for your use growing alongside the covered terrace.

An idyllic experience in St Denis-Catus

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at St Denis-Catus. We all thought the house was wonderful: even though we had been provided with good photographs ahead of our visit, these did not do the house justice. It had been lovingly restored and provided very comfortable and spacious accommodation for ten people. More importantly, it had a wonderful atmosphere which combined historic grandeur with a welcoming ambience. The pool area was large and well-equipped with loungers and there was always shade available. We think that some of the loungers are probably past their sell-by date, however.

Nicole and Hugh were very friendly and responded quickly to the few queries we raised. They made excellent recommendations about local restaurants which resulted in two memorable evenings out.

We visited Saint-Cirq La Popie which is crammed with interesting arts and crafts shops. We managed to spend lots of Euros whilst admiring the fairytale architecture. We also enjoyed Rocamadour, though the prices were exorbitant! Some of our party also made a successful visit to Le Gouffre de Padirac - if you want to avoid the queues, the trick is to get there before 10am! La Bastide Murat is a lovely town, with the most beautiful Mairie and a lovely atmosphere. Closer to home, Le Lac Vert outside Catus was a great resource and a nice alternative to the pool. Gourdon also has some lovely shops, but again is rather pricey.

The whole region is very friendly and pro-English, which is reassuring! On the other hand, you don't feel overrun with Brits; it's very French. Very charming, very relaxing, very beautiful. A wonderful place for a holiday.
