The village of Stow has a population of about 400. There is a post office / general store, a cafe / gallery, village hall, a medical centre, an all-weather sports ground with tennis court, and a large public park with children's play areas. Edinburgh is very accessible - about 40 minutes by car or 1 hour by bus to the city centre. Within a short drive are the historic towns of Melrose, Peebles, Innerleithen, Kelso, Lauder, Jedburgh, Selkirk and Galashiels where you can find museums, a range of pubs, restaurants, hotels and interesting shopping in the traditional town centres. Visits can be made to the ancient abbeys of Melrose, Kelso and Jedburgh, to the castles at Thirlestane, Neidpath, Floors, Roxburgh, Hermitage or to the country houses at Mellerstain, Traquhair and Abbotsford (Walter Scott's house). There are many marked walks, of varing difficulty, through the countryside and forests. The excellent mountain biking facilities at Glentress are 30 minute away by car.
