Notes: Vicarage cottage is bright and welcoming with comfortable furniture and new beds. The cottage was once the drawing room and bedrooms of the Vicarage and the fire place and various period features including shutters take one back into the early 19th century. It has recently been refurbished and is cheerful and attractive. There is a £1.00 coin meter for some but not all of the electricity. Hollinsclough is a charming friendly village in remarkable country where the sounds are the distant rumble of a passing tractor, cows and chickens going about their daily life and the stream running down to the River Dove.

Away from the maddening crowd

We booked Vicarage cottage hoping for a peaceful location that would allow us to revisit Derby and other areas of my fathers youth, yet be able to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the Derbyshire countryside when we did not feel like driving anywhere.

Vicarage cottage served this admirably. Based in a small unspoilt village in the middle of the Peak district, that saw very little traffic it provides an ideal base for walkers or those wanting to escape the bustle of modern life.

The owner was helpful without being obtrusive. Booking simple and straightforward.

A car is a must as there are no services in the village, not even a pub but shops and other services are only a few minutes drive away. The cottage is simply but nicely furnished and the kitchen is amply provided with cooking utensils and cutlery.

The room are are a good size but those with mobility problems should be aware this is a typical cottage with steep stairs and a short walk on a sloping path to the car.

There seemed no reception for mobile phones in the village but their was a public phone box available. TV is limited to basic terrestrial channels with poor reception.

Electricity was on a meter, which was probably my only niggle. Though the cost was minimal it was still irritating having to remember coins and not something we were accustomed to.

If you are planning walking climbing or other activities that involve enjoying the unique scenery of the Peak district this cottage makes a great base. We went in May but in a good summer with the garden and barbecue this would be a lovely spot to chill in the evenings.

For families I think you would be wise to bring along some old fashioned entertainment for the evenings or any rainy days.

We have had two holidays at vicarage cottage and thoroughly enjoyed them both.
Staying at the cottage takes you out of the "All to hectic life" that we live and is really cosy.
Its quiet location is ideal for exploring the peak district.
We will Return again.

Idyllic Retreat

Review Submitted: August 25, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2008
We stayed for a mini break in the October half term in this delightful cottage. It's rural setting within walking distance of two exciting hills including Chrome Hill make it a safe but interesting place for children to explore. The cottage is about half an hours drive from Alton Towers (which we did with our tescos vouchers!) but equally close to Mam Tor and all the caves. The cottage is well equipped and very comfortable. We were very happy there and would certainly consider going back there again.

We returned home from a week at Vicarage Cottage yesterday. We are a family of 4 and it had plenty of space and character and 'welcome'. By far the most attractive feature is the location ! This months ( Sept 09) ' Country Walking' magazine has a front cover shot which is literally in the back garden ! We walked up that very hill from the cottage. The night times .. and day times, are silent but for animals. Rush hour in Hollinsbrough are the parcel lorries and cows around 10 am ! Longnor is 2 miles away and has great pubs, a great kids playground and small shops and an indoor climbing wall ! And the BEST chippy !!
The cottage garden is not huge ( footy pitch size ) but with careful and diplomatic negotiation the boys were able to get into the primary school playing fields footy pitch whenever they wanted.

Vicarage cottage is not about high tech and flawless furnishings. It is about genuine old village culture, farm routines and stunning scenery. Everything you need is there and the shower is hot and great. There is a coin meter but only for electrics ( storage heaters are paid for by the owner) and we only put in £10 which lasted all week. The cottage backs onto a farm where you will be welcome to take part in any of the jobs .. getting the cows in .. horse shoes .. mucking out .. catching loose cows on the road .. Great fun !
The owner is the nicest man you could hope to meet and lives 10 mins away. He lived in Vicarage Cottage for 5 years himself. We had a pint with him and a village natter.
We went in warm weather and we didnt need heating. In colder months I would take slippers and jumpers. Being an old house the insulation is not great and it will be cold and draughty in winter.
There is a super washing machine which got well used after the muddy walks and our boys river swimming kit. There are endless stunning walks and swimming/ paddling from the cottage.

For restaurants , shops, things you need .. Buxton is only 10 mins away and has most things. I found Waitrose easy to get to and full of delicious things to eat and drink ! The house was so cosy we ate in every night and cooked. We took our ipod for music but there is a CD player. We did get a chippy tea from Lognor one night which was fab !
A must is a walk into the fields after dark. We took our boys with head torches down the lane and led in a field watching shooting stars in a huge and starry sky. Incredible !

Enjoy !!

Vicarage Cottage is an absolute delight! Situated in a peaceful village location, there are stunning walks from right outside the front door!
The cottage is very pretty inside, with all improvements being sympathetic with the period, and many authentic details being retained. This means the cottage feels very much a part of the local environment. It is clean, comfortable and very well-equipped. We had a great holiday exploring the beautiful Peak District and enjoying the local pubs and restaurants!
