We returned home from a week at Vicarage Cottage yesterday. We are a family of 4 and it had plenty of space and character and 'welcome'. By far the most attractive feature is the location ! This months ( Sept 09) ' Country Walking' magazine has a front cover shot which is literally in the back garden ! We walked up that very hill from the cottage. The night times .. and day times, are silent but for animals. Rush hour in Hollinsbrough are the parcel lorries and cows around 10 am ! Longnor is 2 miles away and has great pubs, a great kids playground and small shops and an indoor climbing wall ! And the BEST chippy !!
The cottage garden is not huge ( footy pitch size ) but with careful and diplomatic negotiation the boys were able to get into the primary school playing fields footy pitch whenever they wanted.
Vicarage cottage is not about high tech and flawless furnishings. It is about genuine old village culture, farm routines and stunning scenery. Everything you need is there and the shower is hot and great. There is a coin meter but only for electrics ( storage heaters are paid for by the owner) and we only put in £10 which lasted all week. The cottage backs onto a farm where you will be welcome to take part in any of the jobs .. getting the cows in .. horse shoes .. mucking out .. catching loose cows on the road .. Great fun !
The owner is the nicest man you could hope to meet and lives 10 mins away. He lived in Vicarage Cottage for 5 years himself. We had a pint with him and a village natter.
We went in warm weather and we didnt need heating. In colder months I would take slippers and jumpers. Being an old house the insulation is not great and it will be cold and draughty in winter.
There is a super washing machine which got well used after the muddy walks and our boys river swimming kit. There are endless stunning walks and swimming/ paddling from the cottage.
For restaurants , shops, things you need .. Buxton is only 10 mins away and has most things. I found Waitrose easy to get to and full of delicious things to eat and drink ! The house was so cosy we ate in every night and cooked. We took our ipod for music but there is a CD player. We did get a chippy tea from Lognor one night which was fab !
A must is a walk into the fields after dark. We took our boys with head torches down the lane and led in a field watching shooting stars in a huge and starry sky. Incredible !
Enjoy !!
