The picturesque and lively town of Barga is situated at the base of the Appennine Mountains, 410 meters above sea level, a forty minute drive from Lucca. Barga vecchia (the old town) is a charming network of narrow streets, archways and winding stairways, containing many cafes, restaurants, shops, and a theatre. There is a Saturday morning market every week and a Sunday antique market come to Barga once a month.
Barga's crowning glory is the Duomo, from which one can enjoy stunning views over the surrounding rooftops, terraced hills and distant mountains.
During July and August there are many festivals, including the renowned BARGA JAZZ and BARGA OPERA festivals. For nature lovers, the Garfagnana is a well known trekking and hiking area, with many trails of various skill levels providing walks to the small villages and into the undisturbed mountains above Barga. The town also offers a public swimming pool, tennis courts, and horseback riding.
