Our three properties are in a small hamlet near Cheffois in the Vendée, south of the Loire valley and between the cities of Nantes and Poitiers. They were built between 150 and 200 years ago but have been renovated and modernised over the last few years. The original farm cottage and barns have been converted to three properties - a Farm Maison, and a recently renovated Cottage and Gîte. They stand in around one acre of private and secluded gardens, with many areas of flowerbeds, lawns and shady corners. In the gardens is the shared pool with its terracotta coloured terrace and ample space for sun worshippers. To one side of the terrace is a gazebo where you can escape from the heat of the sun or, if you are energetic enough, play table tennis. There is even a more open area where, during the cooler parts of the day, the children (big and little!) can play football –even football nets are provided! Year round hire is available. All properties are non-smoking and no pets please.

The Cottage has been finished, both inside and out, in the traditional cream coloured plaster over thick, stone walls beneath a low slopping roof covered in the local curved tiles. You enter the Cottage from the patio into a cool, tiled lounge whose ceiling soars up to the rafters while beyond is the low beamed dining area with a well-equipped, open plan kitchen off to one side. Off the lounge are a bathroom, a large double bedroom and the stairs to another large double bedroom, a very low beamed shower room and then the surprise of a mezzanine floor overlooking the lounge and leading to the third bedroom, a twin bedded room. All the upstairs rooms have wooden floors and beamed ceilings that go right up to the apex of the Cottage.

From our hamlet, La Guérinière, it is not far to Maillezais where you could take a punt to explore the green waterways of Le Marais Poitevin, or you could relax on the beach at La Tranche-sur-Mer. La Rochelle with its bustling, fortified harbour is only 35 miles further down the coast. You could even spend a whole day at Puy du Fou being delighted by their dramatic re-enactments of an invasion by Vikings or Roman gladiator fights and chariot racing in a huge coliseum, or, if the history and the future of film is your thing, then a visit to Futuroscope near Poitiers is a must. You could, of course, visit a museum - every town has a least one covering all manner of interests - or even try out a restaurant or two – there are many, sometimes in the most unexpected locations, around the area. For those who enjoy a local market, there is a big one at Fontenay-le-Comte every Saturday selling food, clothing, jewellery and some unusual gifts. Other local towns hold markets on different days.

Beautiful break in the countryside

I stayed in the cottage at the beginning of July, and had a very relaxing break with my husband and seven year old son. The property itself was spotless, and really well maintained - it had everything we could have needed. Loved having our own garden area, where we could sit and have a barbeque in the evenings. Our son could play in the pool, use the table tennis or play some of the games provided. Though there was only three of us, there is plenty of room for six. The property is quite rural - we couldn't have walked into Cheffois with our son but there are shops and a supermarket a short drive away. We had lots of days out with everything around 45 minutes to an hour away - good examples are La Rochelle, Puy Du Fou Park, renting a boat on the Marais Poitevin, the market and chateau at Fontenay Le Comte. The owners were very helpful, and I would recommend the property to a friend.
