Halfway up a valley and commanding breath-taking views over the rolling landscape of the Val di Chiana to the mountain range dominated by Monte Amiata, the Casa del Mulino enjoys a secluded setting with no buildings overlooking the house or swimming pool. Pool available most months. See website for more details. This farmhouse, built over 200 years ago and sensitively restored over the past 30 years, stands in extensive grounds. These include a 'secret garden' with statues and surrounded by a wisteria-covered pergola, classically inspired parkland with a 'temple' and monuments, and a woodland hollow with a stream running through it and flowers on its banks. It is a fine location for walks and bird watching. Ideally situated to discover lesser known towns and sites in southern Tuscany and nearby Umbria, it is also within easy reach of the famous centres. Seasonal pleasures vary from birdsong and wild flowers in spring and early summer to the grape harvest in autumn.

Close to lesser known historic towns and sites in southern Tuscany and nearby Umbria, the house is also within easy reach of such famous centres as Siena, Assisi, Arezzo, Cortona, Perugia, Montepulciano and Florence. Rome is only 2 hours away by regular train from the local station. Lake Trasimeno is a 20 minutes drive and offers boating, windsurfing, swimming and trips to the islands. Seasonal pleasures vary from birdsong and wild flowers in spring and early summer to the grape harvest in autumn. The house is in a fine location for walks and bird watching. In addition to the extensive shopping resources of Cortona/Camucia some 3 miles away (and designer outlets in the area), there are local bars and shops, including a pharmacy, and a regular bus route all within 15 minutes' walking distance at the bottom of the valley. Staying at home allows you to relax by the pool (9 x 4.4 x 1.2m) or find a shady spot in the private 3 acre parkland.

    For 3-6 people (up to 29th May or after 9th Oct): £480; For 3-6 people (29th May - 31st July): £725; For 3-6 people (11th Sept - 9th Oct): £525. For 3-6 people (after 9th Oct): £480.

  • Refundable deposit to cover breakages: 100 pounds sterling.
    Add 75 pounds sterling extra if booking one week only (discounts available for bookings of more than 4 weeks).
  • Due to limited laundry services in the area, it is better if guests bring their own sheets and towels (otherwise add 10 pounds sterling per person per week. Free use of linen for first week if laundered by guests). This is the only additional charge. Blankets are provided.

  • Top Floor: Double bedroom, bathroom with shower, spacious sitting-room, all suitable for 2 people. Lower Floor: Large bedroom/sitting room with double bed, chests of drawers, wardrobe, lamps, upholstered cane armchairs and a sofa. Next to it is a smaller room with similar furniture, 2 beds, chest of drawers, cupboard and washbasin. Both rooms have separate entrances onto the front garden with trees and flowers. The fully equipped bathroom is entered from the smaller room via a lobby, as well as from outside. The tiled floors are covered by rugs and all the windows have shutters and mosquito nets. The main rooms are restored sensitively in the local style with exposed beams and whitewashed walls. Another room, the Orchard Room, is available as an optional extra. It has 2 beds, basin, wall cupboards, table, chairs and lamps and is entered separately from its own small garden with a separate bathroom with shower and W.C. Ironing equipment available as well as hairdryers in bathrooms.

'All four of us can say without reservation that the time we spent at the Casa del Mulino this summer was the best of our many family holidays in Italy. It offered a superb home base, a good location with everything from historic sites to good shopping and swimming. Its position in relation to the autos trade was really first rate. No other house we stayed in had such a perfect location. We all had a relaxing time, one of the nicest things being the chance to enjoy the flora and fauna on our many rambles - lizards, fireflies, and so on.'
