Further details for this holiday cottage rental in Minho & Costa Verde, Portugal

Golf: There are three golf courses all within easy driving distance from the cottage. The closest is an excellent 18 hole woodlands golf course at Ponte de Lima (around 15 minutes drive). At Esposende (around 30 minutes drive) there is a 9 hole course set in a pleasant holiday complex. The course called Quinta de Barca has par 4's and par 3's, more suited to the holiday style of golf but well worth a visit. As with most of the courses in Portugal, the greens are usually in good order. At Estela around 40 minutes drive there is a links style 18 hole golf course adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. Estela plays host to many cooperate golfing days and the Portuguese Open has previously been held there. At all the courses there are excellent practicing facilities, especially at Estela. Changing and shower facilities are very good at all the courses, also first class catering with a special lunch menu. It is adviseable to avoid the golf courses at weekends as the clubs are busy with competitions

Why visit Northern Portugal?: The North of Portugal has become increasingly popular with visitors. The Portuguese Government have invested heavily over the past few years to bring attention to this most lovely area of Portugal. Ponte de Lima is an old Roman Town, reputedly one of the oldest in Portugal. It's famous for the bridge built by the Romans which spans the River Lima. There are some lovely old buildings and churches. During the summer months there are many activities within the town including the famous Equine show at the purpose built arena. The bi-weekly market held on the river beach is always an attraction. The town's gardens are open and visitors are asked to pay the sum of 1 euro for entry! In most of the major towns in the area there are 'Tourismo' offices. Here you will find details of the local events which may change throughout the season. Barcelos which is less than 20 KM from the cottage is another interesting town where you must visit the Thursday market, reputedly the largest in Portugal.

More places to visit.: Viana do Castelo some 25 KM from the cottage is still a working port. Shipbuilding still continues and there is a fish market where you can buy fish direct from the fishermen. Viana has a vast number of interesting buildings to visit including an art galleriy and a museum. There is a train station at Viana where you can travel south to Oporto or north into Northern Spain. There is a funicular at the back of Viana which takes you up to the old Church and hotel visable in the skyline. Around 25 KM to the north of Viana is Caminha. Here the mouth of the River Minho separates Portugal from Spain. It's great fun to take the ferry accros to Spain. It only takes around 10-15 minutes and runs continuously from early morning until evening. There is a nature reserve within walking distance on you arrival in Spain. The north of Portugal is famous for the National Parks. These are protected regions situated to the east of the country and are vast areas with many species of birds and animals

Peaceful haven

What a find!! Lily cottage is a well designed retreat, beautiful inside and out, superbly renovated.
We spent 11 days here and can honestly say we did not want to leave. The owner was there to meet us with a welcome pack of wine, beers, tea, milk, cheese, etc.The cottage has a well equipped kitchen,T.V and all B.B.C. channels, plenty of reading material including maps etc.The view from the courtyard over the valley is stunning, as are the walks thro the pine trees, residents are very polite and acknowledge you any time of the day.
This is the most peaceful and relaxing holiday we have ever spent, just the sounds of a distant church bell and
"feathered friend" no noisy traffic and NO STREET LIGHTS!
We will return to this perfect haven.
Owner's Response: We are obviously delighted to receive such a fantastic review from "himandher". The whole concept of Lily Cottage is to cater for clients wishing to stay in a peaceful location at a lovely old property with all the modern facilities they have come to expect, yet within reach of the best Northern Portugal has to offer.
Thank you

My husband and I had a fantastic holiday when we stayed at Lily Cottage. It's a super location and the property was immaculately prepared for us and far exceeded our expectations. We will most definitely return and have no hesitation in recommending it to any of our friends. If we could find a place in Portugal like this we would consider buying it for our retirement home.
Forget the Algarve, go to the North of Portugal for your next holiday, we were glad we did!!

grand design

Review Submitted: September 14, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
My partner, our 11 year old son & myself had a wonderful two week stay at Lily Cottage in July / August 2008.
I've already recommended it to several people as we were so impressed. We would love to stay there again.
The directions supplied are excellent & our excitement built as we drove up the winding road through the forests. We were not disappointed! The view from the large courtyard-terrace is breathtaking. The standard of finish of the property is superb.[if only we could find a builder of this standard in England] The house is spacious & well laid out, all on one level. It was immaculately clean throughout & had everything you could wish for. Sergio, the caretaker was extremely helpful & speaks superb English.
The property is gorgeous & set in a stunning location down it's own little drive. We didn't see another soul when 'at home', but were only a couple of minutes drive from the nearest village & the local 'mercado', which sold everything from fresh bread to wood burning stoves- & everything in between!
The nearest town is Ponte de Lima, it is a quite small but lovely town, probably about the size of Stroud in Gloucestershire. We spent a lot of time there as there was so much to do- including the 2008 World Horseball Championship [free of charge], International garden festival [1 Euro for adults, under 16's free], river beaches, outdoor pool, mountain bike racing on a course through the town centre etc. There is an excellent restaurant 'Sabores do Lima' where we ate several times, local specialities are delicious & lovely staff, reasonably priced & portions ample[ which include an array of side dishes]- we found that 2 'half dose' portions was ample for the 3 of us & the restaurant is happy to serve 2 meals for 3 people- unlike England!
The cottage is well placed for visiting many places- we went to Porto; the wetlands reserve; Ponte da Barca- which has an excellent river beach, lovely walks & also has a castle which is being renovated & 60 famous stone granaries, the national Park, the beach at Viana do Castelo is excellent & very safe, with areas for kite surfing, surfing, swimming, windsurfing etc. You can drive straight to it with Tom Tom, alternatively park in the underground car park on the seafront & take the hourly boat taxi. The beaches on the river Lima are great & child friendly, especially at Ponte da Barca & Ponte do Lima. The largest weekly market in Portugal is held in Barcelos & is worth a visit.
Owner's Response: It is most gratifying after all the hard work of the rebuilding and refurbishing of Lily Cottage over the past two years to receive such a glowing review. We look forward to your return and again would make you most welcome.
Thank you

Our Stay at Lily Cottage July 2008

Lily Cottage was all it lived up to be and more. This property was easily accessed from Porto Aiport with very accurate directions. The quality of the building and it's interior were excellent and immaculate and the views were outstanding. It's a very quiet location, just what we wanted yet very close to the Historic Towns and National Parks of Portugal we wanted to visit.Having stayed at various types of accomodation throughout Europe this must be the best!!
We would definitely come back again and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone. Thank you

Our stay at Lily Cottage

Rutger Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Review Submitted: September 4, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
This Summer we spent two weeks at the Cottage. This secluded cottage was easily found with the concise directions we received from the owner. We found the cottage to be clean and spacious enough for four adults. The description of the cottage found on this website was very accurate, although the main courtyard is a shared space with a villa that was not occupied during our stay. We would stay there again. One of us is a daily wheelchair user and had no access issues within the cottage. However, the driveway and patio are constructed of cobblestones that are uneven but manageable. Besides the travel information we had, we found at the cottage numerous maps and brochures, which were very informative. There was no internet access.
Owner's Response: The client has given a very honest review of my property and the fact that they would stay there again is a compliment to me. Internet access would normally be available (F.O.C) but on this occasion the provider slipped up and has since apologized!!!! I hoped the reviewer would have mentioned the lovely views from the cottage as well as the peaceful and quiet surroundings.
