Casa delle Fonti, so named for the 11th century ‘fonti’ or spring opposite the front gate, perches on a knoll above terraces of olive groves. It is surrounded by olive, fruit and nut trees as well as cypresses, oaks and pines. We hand pick the olives in early November and press our own ‘Olio Extra Vergine’ – an oil of high quality. Summer sees fruit trees bearing as well as hazelnuts whilst the walnuts are picked in autumn. Chickens give us free-range eggs and various other herbs and vegetables are also grown. We are happy to share excess produce with visitors. Wildlife abounds – birds of many species including nightingales and cuckoos and you may see deer, spiny anteaters and boar. The wildflowers mass in spring and in early summer the fireflies twinkle in the garden after dark. The owners, Francesco and Sharon both have an extensive knowledge of Tuscany. Francesco was born in a nearby town and Sharon has conducted tours in the area for a number of years.

Casa delle Fonti is situated on the verge of the 12th century village of Civitella Marittima in the heart of Tuscany, midway between Siena and the coast, in the area of Tuscany designated the ‘Alta Maremma’ on the border of the provinces of Siena and Grosseto. This is the very heart of Tuscany and encompasses the wine regions of Montecucco and Montalcino. Siena and Grosseto are each only a ½ hour drive. Whilst these are the major cities known to most visitors, there is of course a myriad of picturesque and historic towns and villages in the immediate vicinity. Numerous other attractions also abound close by: hot spas, Roman, Etruscan and medieval ruins, ancient abbeys, national parks, castles, vineyards for wine tasting and dining, restaurants and golf courses.

  • Renovated over a number of years, the property now offers guests a completely independent, self –contained apartment with private entry on the top floor of the house. The guest area is comprised of 2 spacious bedrooms, one double and one twin share or 2 doubles, 1 ½ bathrooms – the larger with bath and overhead shower, the smaller with bidet. There is also a combined kitchen/dining/ lounge room. The fully fitted kitchen area is comprised of a sink, gas cook top and electric oven, exhaust fan and fridge/freezer. The whole is tastefully decorated and furnished.

Notes: As the apartment is on the second floor it is accessed by stairs - inside however is all one level. The shower is over the bath - no separate shower cubicle. Smoking allowed in grounds but not inside the apartment. This is for the convenience of all guests. Ambience: Casa delle Fonti is on the outskirts of the village and commands fabulous views of Monte Amiata, Tuscany's southernmost ski fields and all that lies between, including many other villages, olive groves, vineyards and forrest. The six acre property allows guests to relax by the pool or in the garden and provides an excellent base for exploring the many sites of interest close by or for shopping in Siena, Florence or Grosseto. Whilst here, you will be our only guests - the pool and guest garden areas are exclusively yours and your privacy is assured. We are usually in residence and should you desire we are on hand to offer any advice on itineraries and local knowledge issues such as where to park, restaurant recommendations and places to visit that may be unknown to regular tourists. You will be supplied with a remote control for the automatic gates for easy access and undercover parking is at your door.

Activities and amenities.: Walking: Lane ways off the beaten track allow you to explore to your heart's content. Tennis: The nearby village of Paganico has a clay court which may be booked. Golf: There are 2 championship golf courses within an hours drive. Swimming: The in - house pool is at your disposal or the beaches are a half hour drive Supplies: Civitella has 2 grocery shops and a butcher whilst there are many more options in Paganico - 8 kilometres down the hill. Here you will find 2 supermarkets as well as numerous other food supply outlets. Badmington: available in house

A long way from home but just as comfortable

Our stay at Casa Delle Fonti was nothing short of brilliant. Sharon and Francesco were wonderful hosts. They offered great day trip advice and with wonderful food advice we never went hungry or disappointed. The truffle restaurant was first on our hit list and didnt disappoint. Sharon recommended a wonderful restaurant in Chitavella and we even cooked our own home cooked pasta bought from town. Everything we did, saw and ate was fantastic. We loved our time at the villa and would highly recommend this as a must location to anyone's heading to Italy. Next time we will stay much longer. It was very relaxing and really felt like we were on holidays. We loved sitting by the pool having an afternoon drink or laying under the olive trees in the late afternoon. We even witnessed our first full moon over the mountain sipping on prosecco sitting under the patio with Franc and Sharon. Even if we tried there is nothing we could find wrong with Casa delle fonti. Everything was perfect!

Our stay at Casa delle Fonti

A beautiful location, which is ideally situated for sightseeing in Tuscany. You will need a car, however the main roads make it easy to reach from Pisa and straight forward to explore the local countryside and the cities.

The description of the property and facilities was accurate and ideal for our needs. Sharon & Francesco were very hospitable, welcoming us on our first day with a glass of wine, nibbles and everything we needed to know including tips on where to visit and eat, especially where to buy the local wine, which was such good value and great taste. They were available throughout our stay for any advice we needed and also being mindful of the balance between giving us enough information without making it too complicated.

A couple of the restaurants that they recommended would never have been found without their directions, but were well worth it. The restuarant in Civitella Paganico village is a must.

They arranged coach transport into Florence from the top of the road which was far easier than expeceted and much less stressful than driving.

Emily and Hayley loved lying by the pool, with that stunning view and miss "Gato" (the cat).

We would have no hesitation to recommend this to friends and family.

We had 2 perfect weeks staying in the Tuscan countryside. The apartment was great, clean, well equipped, and gorgeous. Sharon and Francesco were perfect hosts, their local knowledge was fantastic, especcially where to buy the local good red wine !! We arrived mid afternoon on Sunday, the fridge was stocked, the wine was poured, restaurant booked for that evening, What more could one want from a holiday !!! We had 2 boys with us 12 and 14, They thoroughly enjoyed the pool ( and the kitten !!) and the trip to Modena, flash cars galore. Ideal base for sightseeing, Siena close by, Florence, Rome and numerous hilltop villages.Visit to the local vineyards essential as well as the hot spa 10 minutes up the road. Perfect relaxing holiday that will be hard to match. Thank you Sharon and Francesco

The apartment was everything as described and we couldnt have asked for anything more during our stay. Sharon and Francesco are fantastic hosts and very knowledgeable about Tuscany. They provided us with a variety of day trips so that we were able to plan an itinerary for our stay and recommended to us fantastic restaurants. We have travelled Italy and were most impressed with the flavour of the food in Tuscany as well as the table wines. The afternoon swims in the pool were topped off with the amazing scenery surrounding the apartment. Our stay in Tuscany would not have been the same without the extensive information provided to us by Sharon and Francesco.

Relaxation in Tuscany

Our second stay at Casa del Fonti... had a wonderful time again with Sharon and Francesco. Gorgeous property with fabulous views, lots of peace and quiet, beautifully decorated and well-appointed apartment with the comfiest bed in Italy. The kitchen was a highlight for those days when we wanted a quiet stay at home meal. We enjoyed the use of the pool and badminton game - terrific fun! Great place to stay, centrally located to all the sites you want to see in the Siena area, lots of good places to eat nearby and friendly hosts who have a great knowledge of the area, with great tips on what to see and where to eat. We have no hesitation in recommending this property to others.
