This island, with its peaceful bays and golden beaches, is the third largest of the Ionian Islands and offers pleasant diversions for beach lovers and city lovers alike.
One of the most fascinating natural wonders of Greece are the Blue Caves of Zakynthos. Situated on the northernmost point of the island, these caves are almost all entirely filled with water and are reachable by boat. They cause anything that enters their depths to take on the gentle blue hue of their walls.
The city of Zakynthos is the capital and largest on the island. It contains many places of interest including the Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos, the Museum of Solomos, Kalvos and Eminent Zakynthians and a magnificent Venetian castle. The Byzantine Museum contains an excellent collection of icons from the Byzantine era to the 19th century, and the Museum of Eminent Zakynthians contains relics of these poets and other famous Zakynthians. The Venetian castle was built upon the ruins of an ancient acropolis.

Villa Ella's Location
Villa Ella is located in Agrilia village at the quiet end of Laganas. It is surrounded by Olive groves and is very private but close enough to the shops and supermarkets for those essential items. The beach is approx 1.5km which is an enjoyable walk both during the day and in the evening. Taxi's are on hand and charge around 6 euros into town or back. There are horse riding stables in walking distance and you can hire locally a car, motorcycle or bicycles for the more energetic! The island has many very nice beaches but two have an interesting bonus. Laganas and Geraka are home to the Caretta-Caretta sea turtles. Here these creatures come ashore at night to mate and to lay their eggs, a fascinating site for those with an interest in biology. At night Zakynthos city and Tsilivi offer good options for dining and accommodation.
Zante
Zakythos has luxuriantly fertile mountains, ancient villages, Venetian monasteries, together with the bustling resorts of the south making this an island to please everyone. You can find long sandy beaches, small secluded coves, you can visit traditional monasteries, walk among the countryside where the smell of wild herbs is intoxicating, taking in breathtaking views of cliffs, sea and amazing sunsets. You can visit the famous Ship Wreck Bay, voted one of the top ten beaches in the world by Conde Naste Traveller, the Blue Caves or the home of the Caretta Turtle. If you are after excellent shopping, art and culture the Capitial Zakynthos town is certainly worth visiting. The square in the evening tends to be very lively and there are lots of restaurants to choose from where you can sit under the stars and enjoy local traditional Greek dishes. The island itself is easy to drive around and the scenery very beautiful.

Brilliant holiday!

Review Submitted: August 27, 2008, Date of stay: May, 2008
Us 3 girls stayed at villa ella in the middle of may. It was our first time staying at a villa so we was a bit nervous. Once landing in Greece we couldnt wait to get to the villa and jump in the pool! but... we was disappointed to find that there was no one waiting for us. There was abit of a mix up as our flight changed but the owner was aware. After an hour or so we made our own way and found the villa with difficulty as no one had heard of it. Once we got to the villa the reps were there waiting which was lucky.
We were greeted and shown around which was lovely. The place was spotless and there was the essential food left in the fridge and cupboards.
The only let-down was that the pool wasnt heated and being in may the sun wasnt warm enough to heat it up but that didnt stop us. The washing machine didnt work, and wasnt fixed even though we reported it. Also there wasnt any instructions for the air-con/heating which would have been helpful.
Taxis were very cheap and reliable as we used them often to go into town and back, as the walk took about 25mins. Very nice cenery if u do walk. Food was quite cheap and the cocktails at night were lovely. There also wasnt a taxi arranged to the aiport going back which was dissapointing and there wasnt any refund.
Overall we had a lovely week and the villa was a great place to stay with lots of room and it was very homely. We would deffinatly think of going back.
Thanks.
Owner's response:
Glad to hear the girls had a great holiday, but sorry to hear about the flight change and the pickup wait. We realised early on in the year that flights and pickups could cause problems so as its easy to get a taxi and around 15euro we now supply all clients with simple direction for the taxi driver as the villa was only build in 2007. The pool isn't heated and can be a little fresh at the start of the season, most of Greece don't have heated pools. The washer has been replaced as it was new and became faulty, things take a little longer to replace on a small island. There are several ways to get to both the town and the beach and I'm glad they enjoyed the scenary. September is a good time to visit as the place is quiet after the rush of the summer holidays has past but the weather is still lovely and hot.
