This region of Languedoc Roussillon is bursting with sites of historical and artistic beauty which has attracted famous painters like Matisse, Dali and Picasso, many of whose work are hanging in Ceret Art Museum. Languedoc is the largest producer of wine in France (grenache, Sauvignan, Chardonnet, Carignan and Syrah). The picturesque undulating countryside not only affords stunning views over the mountains and sea but if one were to follow one's nose on the famous 'Route du Vin' ,through cool valleys and over gently rolling foothills, one's reward would be the warm welcome by many of the famous and closely guarded secret names of the local 'vigneron'. The beautiful mystical Mt Canigou provides the cinematic backdrop with the equally dramatic rocky coast from Collioure to Banyuls, right through to the Spanish Border. Cathar castles, fortresses and monasteries perched on top of rocky outcrops in Belesta, Queribus and Serrabonne.
