A charming, beautifully restored detached stone cottage with private pool in a rural hamlet a few miles from the medieval market town of St Jean d'Angely, and under an hour's drive from the sandy beaches of the Atlantic Coast. The perfect location for those who want to be quiet without being too remote, and with plenty to keep the children occupied. Maison Guerin, which is believed to be around 175 years old, is situated on a quiet lane in the village of St Pierre de Juillers. At the bottom of the lane is a stone bridge crossing the small River Nie, with woodland, fields of corn, sunflowers, the odd vineyard and excellent cycling routes beyond. The house sits in its own walled garden, which includes a courtyard with old well and bread oven. Beyond is the swimming pool, which is 10m x 4m and 1.5m deep, and surrounded by a paved terrace on which are sunbeds, table, chairs, umbrella and a solar-heated shower. Two games rooms offer full-size table tennis, pool, baby football and darts.

St Jean d'Angely, about 5 miles away, is a beautiful medieval town with a fantastic market and loads of good restaurants. There are lots of interesting towns nearby to visit, including Saintes, Cognac, Surgeres and some beautiful beaches resorts along the coast under an hour away, including La Rochelle, Royan, Ile de Re, Ile d'Oleron, Meschers, Fouras, Brouages, we could go on! For kids, there are water parks, zoos, an aquarium, boat trips, beaches, playgrounds, etc all within easy reach. Also not far, at Poitiers, is the highly recommended Futuroscope which is a fantastic day out for the whole family.

Thank you immensely for the rental of your home this summer. Yes the weather was fantastic and so was your house! We had a wonderful, relaxing 2 week break, in a fabulous part of France.

I cannot thank Helen and David enough. They were so friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We had a great time, so a big thank you, once again.

matched the description exactly. Can't say how great was our welcome to the house. Helen was wonderful and most helpful.

Lovely large house in hamlet in a rural area

We stayed here in July 2009. It is perfectly placed, about 10 minutes' drive from the nearest large town (St-Jean d'Angély), and about 30-40 minutes from places like Saintes and Cognac, and about an hour or just over to La Rochelle.

We used the pool a lot when the weather was warm, but it was a bit too cold (not heated) on cloudy days.

The small courtyard was great for cooking barbecues and eating out, and was just big enough for our 5 year old to enjoy playing boules and cricket.

We couldn't get the broadband wi-fi to work, but we were able to connect our laptop using a cable, which was fine by us.

We didn't hire the air conditioning - it didn't quite get hot enough while we were there. But there were a couple of nights when we would like to have had the use of a fan (would recommend you bring one if you stay here).

Save for the sound of cows, sheep, cockerels and pigeons, it was far quieter than you might imagine, even though it is surrounded by a few other houses, and is in the middle of a small hamlet.

All in all, a great place to stay. We enjoyed it very much.
