Review of stay in Pacentro

Liz and Ralph Ipswich
Review Submitted: May 9, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
Pacentro is beautiful - we were absolutely captivated by it and can't wait to return! What spectacularly beautiful and varied scenery - and charming town. The house is perfect - the terraces make it very special. The house is well equipped and comfortable. We walked most days - we couldn't get enough of the wonderful walking - glorious sunshine, snow capped mountains, spectacular 360 degree views - amazing. The restaurants are interesting and varied and much cheaper than other parts of Italy. The Caldora - slow food restaurant is wonderful!
Lots of useful information in the house - walking maps, sightseeing information etc. We managed one trip out to the colourful market in Sulmona, but the house and village and local walking was more than enough for a peaceful and relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. Can't wait to return!
Owner's Response: Liz and Ralph had a great time. This was their first visit to Italy and they were amazed by how friendly everyone in the village was. They were always greeted with buon giorno or bouna sera as they met the villagers in the narrow streets, or in the shops. Something they had not experienced before. People often chatted to them in the cafes. Although they didn't speak Italian there is usually someone around who has spent time in the US or Australia. I think we have made some converts to Italy!!

Tourists without a car!

Review Submitted: June 1, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
My partner and I had such a wonderful time in Pacentro. The village was so picturesque and the villagers so friendly. We speak a little Italian and soon made friends with the local people who seemed to be genuinely pleased to see us in their beautiful village, they really made our stay memorable. It was great just wandering through the narrow streets to the house and as Pacentro is set in the Majella National Park, using the trecking map in the house we were able to organise beautiful long circular walks directly from the village. We also took the very handy bus into the nearest big town Sulmona for market day which was quite an experience. They sell absolutely everything, from designer bags to garden plants. We bought some wonderful Pecorino cheese from an old lady selling her own produce. We also made a round trip on the bus to the scenic mountain village of Scanno where the women still wear Turkish Costumes! Otherwise we just stayed in Pacentro. It had everything we wanted. Good walks, a lovely garden to sit in, bank, Post office, food shops and really wonderful bars and restaurants. We also hired mountain bikes from the Tourist Information Office in Pacentro, they cost just €5 an hour and we went on some fantastic cycle rides up into the National Park, the terrain is very steep and it was quite hard going but the views from the top of the mountain were stupendous and well worth the effort. We were totally self-sufficient using public transport, flying into Rome we spent two nights there seeing the sights, and then took a bus from Tiburtina station in Rome to Sulmona. It was lovely riding through the Appenines with stupendous views and not having to worry about driving. We caught a connecting bus up to Pacentro as Mary suggested, it was great not having to pay for car hire, which is a real added expense and we felt that we got to know the area a lot better through using public transport, we would highly recommend it.

Stay in this wonderful viallge

Gill and Bob Oxfordshire
Review Submitted: May 14, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2008
We returned to Mary's house in Pacentro for a second year running and would go back again and again. Some of the locals even recognised us and greeted us on our return! The house feels very spacious and comfortable, and the views from the garden terraces are hard to drag yourself away from, especially the pink-tinged mountain at sunset.
Walking in the alpine meadows was beautiful, and there are lots trips to do if you want to - local monasteries, or the nearby town of Sulmona for the market and the evening 'Passeggiata'. We also managed Tivoli gardens near Rome on a day trip.
The best thing was wandering up through the narrow streets into the village in the evening for dinner or a drink. We only have a smattering of Italian but managed fine. The number of restaurants is amazing for a small place, and Mary has left lots of hints and tips for buying provisions and eating out.
Owner's Response: We are so glad that Gill and Bob had a good time. I know that they were looking for a place to relax and recharge and from their review it seems they found it. They are one of several groups who have come back to Pacentro more than once as their special place.
