The Castello apartment is in a much photographed Venetian Gothic house in prime position on the main square of the medieval town of Vodjnan in Istria 20 minutes bike ride from the beach. A sweeping circular stone staircase leads to the the apartment on the second floor. The rooms are very spacious and light with views onto the square and church. In 2006 the property was modernised to a very high specification, with attention to the preservation of the original character and free Wi-Fi internet access. Vodnjan is 20 minutes from Pula airport (Ryanair), 2 hours from Rijeka airport and Trieste airport. It is also 20 minutes from Rovinj and 5 minutes from the ferry to Brijuni Islands. The apartment has a roof top terrace with spectacular views. The local area is excellent for biking, exploring, walking and rock climbing. Nearby Pula has a large Roman amphitheatre, a busy harbour as well as museums, shops and many cultural and sporting activities. Frequent bus service.

Istria has been an important gateway to Europe for more than a thousand years. This coming and going is reflected in both culture and architecture making Istria more like Europe than the rest of Croatia. Italian is the official second language here and both buildings and agriculture seem much like Tuscany. The ever popular coastal towns are well worth a visit, but so are the gems inland - the walled medieval hills towns of Groznan and Motovun, the ruined city of Divigrad and the dramatic views from the top of Mt Ucka. Wine, truffles, and a therapeutic hot-spring mud bath can make a great day out. Formerly Vodnjan was a garrison town for the Roman army; later overshadowed by its port, Pula. Today Vodnjan is rebounding in a rather relaxed fashion, and is a fine staging post for trips to the palaces of Tito's island retreats on Brijuni, the beaches of the fishing port of Fazana and the seafood restaurants of Pula.

Castello, my Castello....

Well what can I say that hasn't already been said by the other reviewers, probably not a lot really?

The apartment Castello was perfect, superb location and extremely well presented and very well equipped. Unfortunately the Wi-fi was down during our stay which hindered us a little bit as we'd planned to use our laptop to plan our explorations and check out local information; overall it didn't really detract from the holiday though.

We both loved Vodnjan, which is a charming little town in it's own right. There's pretty much everything you need in the town, apart from maybe an internet cafe for those without their own computer and maybe a Lido for pool lovers.

A couple of really nice Cafe/Bars and two substantial restaurants, this trip we only managed to visit Girotunda which was really good value and quality, but we'll be back to tackle Vodnjanka which is by all accounts excellent. A wander around the towns narrow streets uncovers a wealth of extremely handsome buildings at every turn and made me wish for my lottery numbers to come up.

Despite being inland it’s very convenient for Fazana, a lovely little fishing village turned beach resort which has a good range of eateries and is a good location to visit the Brijuni Islands if you so choose.

Would recommend a hire car, as Istria is definitely worth exploring ad public transport is not great. Mornings for visiting the likes of Motuvun, Novigrad (nice beaches to the north of the town, excellent for snorkelling), Rovinj or Pula and then afternoons at the beach to cool off in the Adriatic Sea …

As my partner said, Castello and Vodnjan would be the perfect destination if you were writing the novel we are all supposed to have inside us....

We had a great short break here in Castello apartment in Vodnjan. The apartment lived up to expectations from the description and photos. It is a well maintained,clean and well equipped apartment, leaving you feeling relaxed a little bit pampered!! The use of the roof terrace is great, offering a super place to relax with great view over the roof tops and to the sea. The sunset at this time of year is awesome to watch from here! We received a good welcome and the "customer service" of the apartment/arrival/keys etc was very well organised.
Vodnjan offers a variety of bars, restaurants and shops. The tourist office was excellent, with friendly staff and great information. We had a great olive oil tasting at Meloto in the village. The nearest beach is just 20 minutes away on the bike, provided with the apartment, and we also enjoyed cycling to Pula and explored this ancient and beautiful town. Overall it was an excellent holiday and we would recommend it to our friends. Thanks for a great stay!

Perfectly equipped, nice and cozy appartment

We loved to stay a week in June 2009 in Castello. The appartment was really perfectly equipped and in proper condition. So it offered us a nice and cozy home for a rainy day. All necessary things, like washing machine with integrated tumbler, WiFi, SAT TV (several satelites) etc. are available and in very good condition.
Also the kitchen was very cleanly and fondly equipped. Even some portions of Fairtrade Bio-Coffee was to be found in the kitchen, along with the required ingredients for a first meal.
The stairway to the roof is a bit tricky and may be a problem for older persons. However it is a nice place with the Campanile (Church tower) in the direct neighbourhood, to spend the rest of the day with a glass of wine e.g.
Overall we enjoyed it very much and would like to recommend it for all those, who love to stay in an authentic environment without any touristical attractions. A car is very helpful if you want to get easily to the beach or to Rovinj or Pula.
Thanks to Tessa and Paul for offering us their appartment for this unforgettable week.

An Istrian Dream

We spent 15 unforgettable days in the flat in June/July 2009. The description of the flat given by Paul and Tessa left nothing to be desired, the Croatian neighbours were extremely friendly, the little market hall and doorstep garden produce sellers are to be recommended as is the local wine- they fill it into your empty 1.5l mineral water bottles!

We shall return!
