The ancient Abbaye of Varennes lies on 4 ha. in the tranquil valley of the river Gourdon. Filled with rustic charm this historic 12th c. Cistertian monastery has provided shelter for lovers of spirituality, nature and art for over 900 years. The two bedrooms are located in the 'dortoir des moines' with a dining-living room, large stone fireplace and piano. Perfect for artists, musicians, writers and lovers it provides a romantic walled garden setting with large lawns, fruit trees and vestiges of the ancient cloister. The countryside is dotted with small châteaux, fortresses, ruins and is 10km from Nohant, the house of George Sand, and its classical music concerts. For lovers of food and wine this is an ideal property for browsing local markets for Berrichon specialties to bring home and enjoy in the large country kitchen with fireplace. Wine tours can be arranged. And one can usually find a 'brocante'(flea-market ) nearby each weekend in season.

The Abbaye of Varennes is located in the Centre of France, La France Profonde, along the route to St. Jacques de Compostelle from Vézelay. The abbaye lies in the heart of the Berry region, one of the hidden treasures of France, steeped in history, gastronomy and wine. Not far lies Nohant, the home of George Sand, and the château of Sarzay. Just 10 kms is the town of La Châtre where one can find the Museum of George Sand and a lively Saturday morning market. The train station of Châteauroux is 35 minutes. Within an hours drive is the cathedral of Bourges, the Abbaye of Noirlac and the château of Valençay. Gargilesse, the village of artists and the summer haunt of George Sand, is a delightful drive. Small château and ruins dot the countryside which have inspired many of George Sand's novels. Not far are the vineyards of the Centre Loire where wine tasting and vineyard visits can be arranged.

Notes: The Abbaye is a refuge from our busy daily lives and is a place out of time.. a place to get away from it all and relax in peace and serenity, to take leisurely walks, to sit and watch the fire and enjoy a glass of wine and each other's company. It is perfect for lovers and lovers of old stones. The house is filled with character and history dating from the 12th century when Henri II, Plantagenet, placed the founding corner stone. For those who love music there is a Pleyel grand piano (ca. 1867) available. The old stone walls lend themselves to create beautiful acoustics. The cozy living room has a big table and large fireplace. Outside you are surrounded by ancient stone walls that within lie rose gardens, a luxurious linden tree which provides shade for outdoor dining, large lawns, and a private corner with a stone table and benches for enjoying apéritifs, reading or just regarding the cats and chickens that frolic about.

Wine Tasting: We have special 2 and 3 night packages which include a tour of the vineyards and winery in Reuilly with meals and rooms at the abbaye with the winemaker. These can also include a tour of a French Oak forest and of the barrel-making facilities where the wine barrels are made.

Music Retreats: The stone walls of the abbaye lend themselves to perfect acoustics for musicians who wish to practice or to play for enjoyment. A grand piano is available. There are numerous classical music concerts in the area throughout the summer and fall.

Painting: The abbaye is the home of the artist Anne de Varennes. It is the perfect place for those who wish to paint the Berrichon countryside or to capture the subtle light falling within the abbaye walls. Easels are available.

First thank you to Anne as she is what makes it extra special!

We only stayed for one night and regret it! It is so lovely I can't believe that we was only there for one night!

We was touring France for our Honeymoon, Compared to Paris and Monte Carlo/ Monaco - what an extreme difference! It was so peacefull and relaxing!

She provides everything that you can ask for, she recomended 'le Forge' restaurant, this was amazing!

We hope to visit again if we have the time before the end o the year and discover the area a bit more!
