The canal du Midi is a World Heritage site, a major acheivement of 17th century engineering and now a major tourist attraction. Le Somail lies in the wine making area of the Minervois on the edge of the coastal plain before it rises steeply into the attractive rugged areas of the Montagnes Noirs. The area is rich in natural beauty from the bird sanctuary at Port la Nouvelle, a water park with a great variety of sea birds, to the limestone gorges and caves of the many rivers coming off the Cevennes. The area is also of great historical interest with various Roman sites as well as castles and abbeys steeped in Cathar history. Towns of particular interest locally are Narbonne, a Roman town with ancient monuments as well as an attractive shopping area, wonderful covered foodmarket with a bustling provincial atmosphere and a weekly street market, Carcassonne, famous for its mediaeval walled city, and also excellent shopping area, and many others, eg Pezenas, birthplace of Moliere.
