Culture:
Spoltore can truly be described as Abruzzo’s centre of culture. July, August and September are packed with traditional folk festivals, local arts and crafts, the Internationally renowned Spoltore Ensemble during August, which this year was preceded by the Abruzzo Film Festival and rounding off in September with the Festa del Vino Spoltore. The Spoltore Ensemble has been held in Spoltore each August for over 20 years now. It is one of the most important summer events in the region, and each year sees the participation of some of the best known names from the worlds of the theatre, music and dance. It started life as a cultural workshop, and its organisers still make sure that it retains something of this flavour. The Piazza D'Albenzio, a square just metres from house is one of the festival’s focal points.
Skiing:
There are several winter sports resorts within easy reach. Campo Imperatore on the Gran Sasso has a modem funicular, four ski lifts and eight ski runs and Prati di Tivo has a chairlift, five ski lifts and nine ski runs, with cross country skiing on two circuits located on the Teramo side of the Tetto d'Abruzzo (the Roof of Abruzzo). Between the Gran Sasso and the Monti della Laga at Prato Selva there are three ski lifts, a chair-lift and ski runs; at Monte Piselli a chair lift, three ski lifts and four ski runs. Further south are the resorts of the Majella, at Campo di Giove and Passo San Leonardo. On the Adriatic side of the Majella, where you can ski looking over the sea, is the Passo Lanciano-Majelletta resort, less than an hour by car from Pescara which offers nine ski lifts and ten ski runs.
Trekking:
Known as the ‘Region of Parks’, one third of Abruzzo’s territory is given over to environmental protection - including the Abruzzo, Majella and Gran Sasso-Laga national parks. This is the only place on the planet you can find the last forty or so Marsican Bears. The brown bear is unique to the park and, though smaller than other bears, an adult male weighs up to 500 pounds. It’s also home to fifty Apennine wolves. It is also home to roe deer, red deer and many wild boar.
