Charming French Country Cottage and Barn Conversion

'Elders' is two houses, a cottage and a barn conversion, and they are both well appointed and furnished. The cottage is a romantic stone property with a large Charentaise fireplace, exposed walls and 2 bedrooms with a balcony accessed from both. The barn has 3 bedrooms, a double height living room with galleried kitchen and both a bathroom and a shower room. One of the bedrooms and the shower room are on ground floor and easily accessible to elderly or disabled guests. The properties are available separately or together. Each property has an area of garden and there is a large gravelled courtyard area for dining alfresco. Terrebourg is a tiny hamlet, but there are larger villages with shops close by whilst the wonderful city of Angouleme with its medieval pedestrianised streets and many restaurants is 20 minutes drive away. The city also provides excellent shopping, a TGV rail link 2 hours 15 minutes from Paris and an airport with Ryan Air flights direct from Stansted..

Terrebourg is a small hamlet about 3 miles from the N10 and about 15 miles from Angouleme. Whilst the hamlet just has a post box and a boule pitch there are shops 2 miles away in the village of St Angeau including a bakery, chemist, petrol station and grocer as well as a bar. The larger town of mansle is 10 minutes away with a far greater selection of shops including a super market, post office and bank as well as several restaurants and bars. Angouleme is a delightful & historic city with extensive shopping facilities, narrow medieval streets full of bars and restaurants and several main attractions including a fine romanesque cathedral and a famous museum of comic strips. The Charente is very rural with gentle hills, forests, fields of sunflowers and vines and excellent opportunities for walking. There are many rivers offering all manner of waterbourne activities and the atmosphere of the region is generally very friendly and relaxed so you can kick-back and enjoy

  • The barn has an atmosphere where the traditional combines with the contemporary. There are stone walls and beams, but the conversion is fairly recent so the furnishings and colour scheme reflect that. The living room is a dramatic double height room with leather sofas and bright rugs and cushions. It has a huge glazed window with doors to the garden and cool terracotta tiled flooring. Off to one side is a large ground floor bedroom with twin beds and a further pull out single bed and this room is suitable for anyone with mobility problems as there is also a shower room close by on the ground floor. The kitchen/dining room is galleried over the living room and has a huge oak table with leather chairs as well as french doors out to a raised area of garden. Upstairs there is a double room, a twin room and a bathroom. Finally back on the ground floor there is a utility room if you need to launder a favourite outfit whilst away!

We stayed at Elders during February/March 2008 and we could not fault it.
Our main attraction to this property was it's internet connection, as we needed to keep in touch with work whilst on our house viewing trip.
There were plenty of logs outside for the fire and you could not fault the super level of customer service from both the owner and the lovely couple who were there to greet us after our long journey. We were even provided with bread, cheese and wine! Not to mention the home made salad!
I would not hesitate to return to this lovely house and would absolutely recommend it to anyone.
