Idyllic rural retreat handy for beaches

From the owner’s accurate description we knew to expect a genuine Cantabrian cottage in an unspoilt part of Spain with easy access to fantastic mountains and wonderful beaches. We needed to accommodate five, including three grown up children, which was possible although one teenager had to use a child sized bunk. The spacious, light top floor room could have accommodated even more of us but served as a second sitting room for quiet reading allowing the TV with full access to UK channels to be watched in the comfy downstairs sitting room. The choice of books in the house was varied and interesting. The generous sized bathroom with bath, as well as a shower room, was a welcome feature.
The house was very clean and well equipped with modern appliances. Everything worked. The woodwork throughout, especially the original beams and the fine modern oak floors, was a pleasure, as was the garden.
Communication with the owner beforehand was easy by email and phone. He met us at the motorway junction and escorted us via the local amenities to the house where he and his wife showed us around. They were very welcoming and informative and made it clear they were available to help at any time if required, which was reassuring as they are bilingual.
What we enjoyed was:-
Peace and quiet especially at night
Eating outdoors in the garden
The fine views from the house and garden of the surrounding hills
Delightful easy walks from the front door
Wildflowers and bird life
Manageable summer weather, i.e. not too hot
Exceptional beaches within easy reach by car
Wide choice of good restaurants serving delicious local food at very fair prices (take your pick) and easy access to good local food shops for self-catering
Guggenheim in Bilbao only ninety minutes drive and the high Picos Europa Mountains not much further.
We would wholeheartedly recommend this property to a friend.
