Wild Boar for Supper?

My wife and I with our pet dog , a Border Terrier, called Eddie stayed in Richard and Julia’s gite on the edge of Brantome from 17 to 31 July and had a super holiday. The web site descriptions and advice were absolutely accurate, and as experienced renters you know when you are staying in a good quality gite. This certainly is of a high standard and our hosts were discreet but enormously helpful whenever they were approached. The pool is large with lovely views across the grounds, and as described, deep in places. The gite is about a 20 minute pretty rural walk down into Brantome, partly on one of the well defined Chemin Rural that you will find around the town, and clear maps of them are available from the local Tourist office.
We walked the Chemin Rural for miles through the attractive forests and sunflower fields all around Brantome This is a good area for cyclists, joggers and walkers.
The gite itself was clean and very attractive inside, with Ethernet access to the internet, good satellite TV facilities and very comfortable sleeping and eating areas. Richard and Julia have done a great job converting the gite which has its own garden, barbecue and terrace area for outdoor eating. The bathroom, W.C. and shower are upstairs and quite spacious.
There is so much to see and do in this part of the Perigord that we were quite spoiled for choice. If you like French markets they are numerous and well scheduled. Most people seem to canoe on the Dronne which we did, and it is great fun and there are many canoe providers all along the river for miles. The architecture in the area is unspoilt and there are so many beautiful market towns to wander around and sample the atmosphere. Alex and I particularly enjoyed Aubetere-sur-Dronne with its lovely hanging houses and the famous St-Jean-de-Cole with its delightful church of St Jean-Baptiste. And the regional capital Perigueux has an attractive old centre on the river which is worth visiting. Brantome itself is of course beautiful, the Benedictine Abbey is a delight, and with lots of little restaurants to dally in, our advice is to take the lunchtime Menu du Jour as the value is usually good and the choice is across a wide price range. It is inevitably a little touristy, but not so much as to make any impact on the town most days.
Thanks for a delightful holiday Richard and Julia, and we hope that the wild boar family that we observed on your grounds continue to return.
