Photos and Description of this Barbentane holiday villa Spacious inside and out, calm, well equipped; a paradise for adults and children

An exceptionally situated villa in Provence near Avignon, in a beautiful, calm setting where the view consists exclusively of mountains and trees, with rabbits and squirrels for company. The photographs show the spacious terrace, the Montagnette (little mountain, pronounced Montanyet) at the bottom of the garden, the swimming pool, the Pétanque pitch (an area of flat earth under the shade to play bowls - a full set is supplied), and the view across the Rhone valley (although the river itself, about a mile away, is not visible from the house because of the trees). The setting is very peaceful (apart from the chirping of the grasshoppers and crickets during the day in July and August, and the autumn wind in the treetops). The nearest road is a quarter of a mile away, with very little traffic. The village is within walking distance (for the energetic), but a car is essential to enjoy the surroundings, when you can tear yourself away from the house, the pool and the Montagnette.

The villa stands in our private woodland - pines, mediterranean oaks and olives - of 8000 square metres (2 acres), grassed and wooded on a gently terraced hillside, a paradise for children and adults. To the south, from the end of the garden, it opens up into a natural reserve of 'garrigue' - rocky mediterranean scrubland and our mini-mountain range dominating the view from the terrace, leading one visitor to remark that in effect we had a 10,000 acre back garden - a slight over statement of course. East and west there is more woodland. North, the ground slopes down gently towards the Rhone through olive groves, farmland and orchards. Nearby (about 1 mile away) is the picturesque village of Barbentane: Medieval castle remains, 12th-15th century church, 17th century Château, narrow streets with steps and archways, old windmill, three boulangeries / patisseries (bakers and cake makers), butcher, greengrocer, supermarket and several restaurants.

Additional information about rental rates

  • Prices shown are per week (Saturday 4 pm to Saturday 10 am). For three or more weeks subtract 10% from third and subsequent weeks.
Towels and bed linen, electricity and heating, laundry and cleaning are all included in the price. So is internet access. Phone calls to fixed phones in W Europe and N America are free (subject to a few reasonable conditions). The grounds and swimming pool will be looked after at our expense.

A booking is confirmed on receipt of a booking form and a non-returnable deposit of 25% of the rental. You may pay in UK £ (Pounds Sterling), € (Euros), or US $ (United States Dollars).
The balance of the rental, together with a security deposit of £1000 or $1500, should be received one month before the start of the holiday. All being well, the security deposit will be returned the week after your departure.
  • Please note the house is for a maximum of 8 people (not counting a baby in a cot). No smoking indoors please. And preferably no pets - or be prepared for a dent in the deposit unless they really are the 'you would never have known they were there' sort. We love them, but some people are allergic to the slightest hint of fur, and the house will definitely be allergic to scratches, marks or any other trace of furry or feathered visitation.

Further details for this holiday villa rental in Barbentane, France

Festival d'Avignon, Croissants & Antiquities : With 3 bakers in the nearby village, you can enjoy freshly baked bread and croissants for breakfast every morning (including Sundays), sitting on the terrace soaking in the warmth and the stunning view of the Montagnette. OK, someone has to go and get them; you will be back in the time it takes to make a pot of coffee, and going into the village (especially the baker's) is always a pleasure. A short bus ride away is Avignon (*** maximum star rating in the Michelin Guide) with its famous (half) bridge ('Sur le Pont d'Avignon...'), Papal Palace, festivals, museums, concerts, street cafés and restaurants... Most famously the July Avignon Festival. Then the rest of Provence, with l'Abbaye de St Michel de Frigolet close by in the Montagnette, St. Rémy de Provence (Wednesday market) just a few kilometres to the south, and Les Alpilles, Glanum and Les Baux. Follow the river south to Arles (Saturday market), or go west to Nîmes, Uzès and the famous Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct.

Beauty, traditions, antiques and the Camargue: To the east visit Fontaine de Vaucluse, l'Isle sur la Sorgue (antique dealers on Sundays) and Gordes. Or Carpentras with its Friday market. From Greek antiquities, Roman temples and arenas, and medieval fortresses, to lively village fêtes with horse riders, Arlésiennes in their colourful traditional costumes, and bulls with the young braves running after them - or being chased - in the streets, you can be as relaxed or as busy as the mood takes you. The Mediterranean is about 40 miles away. You can choose the deserted flatlands of the Camargue (wild horses, bulls and pink flamingos), the unspoilt Les Saintes Maries de la Mer, medieval Aigues Mortes, or Le Grau du Roy with its 18 km (11 miles) of sandy beaches. Or you can keep it local, with horse riding, cycling, walking, practice golf, and ballooning. You can even join in a game of pétanque with the villagers!

Easy to get to : A leisurely drive through France is the ideal, if you have the time. If not, there is the A7 motorway. You can fly into Avignon, Nîmes, Marseille or Nice airports. Slip under the Channel on the Eurostar from London and Ashford (non-stop service to Avignon in the summer - less than 6 hours journey time), or skim across the French countryside on the TGV high speed train from Brussels and major French towns (only 2 hrs 40 mins from Paris to Avignon!). Car hire available at the airports and railway stations. And there's plenty of parking space at the villa.

Other Activities: Pétanque, gourmet dining, hot air balloon

Barbentane - lovely, well appointed property

Annnngie London
Review Submitted: August 13, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We had a really great time at the house - it was exactly as described which is always a relief when taking my 86 year old mother on holiday too! She even had a few swims in the pool which truely delighted her. The scenery is beautiful and relaxing. The pool is in the sun all day, with plenty of shade around.
We returned via
friends in The Aveyron region and Chartres - so a lovely holiday all round.

We had a fantastic holiday staying at the Villa.. This was our first family holiday overseas and the villa and the surrounding area certainly surpassed expectation and we would certainly recommend this to anyone who wants to enjoy a relaxing break in an idylic setting in the provence.

Montagnette, Barbentane, Provence

Dr D Suffolk, UK
Review Submitted: August 4, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
A wonderful holiday property - the pictures do not really do it justice. The location is magnificent...up a quiet lane surrounded by trees and wildlife...it is very secluded and peaceful. The villa is extremely well equipped with everything that you could need (including everything you could need for children of all ages). All the kitchen equipment is new and sophisticated...our children loved the ice maker !. There is also satellite TV, free phone calls (via the internet) and internet access.
The pool and gardens are ideal for a family holiday...the children feel totally safe within the grounds and there is the peace of mind of a pool perimeter alarm in case they stray too near the pool when they shouldn't. The location of Barbentane is very central for visiting local sites...pretty well all the biggies (Arles, Nimes, Pont du Gard,Aigues Mortes etc) are within easy reach and Avignon is nearby (but far enough away so you wouldn't know it was there). It's a 2 minute drive to the village nearby to get fruit, bread etc. The village has all the shops you are likely to need but a supermarket just the other side of the village is also very handy. There are a number of restaurants in the village but we didn't feel the need to try them...meals in the sunshine on the terrace overlooking the pool were too tempting.
Due to its location, a car is essential for this property.
The owners are very attentive and just a (free) phone call away if needed....they really seem to care that you have the perfect holiday. All arrangements before arriving are handled very efficiently with comprehensive information sent by the owners.
The place was spotlessly clean when we arrived and once a week a gardener and cleaner come to service the property. During the week you are left alone but automatic sprinklers and a pool-cleaning robot keep everything ticking over.
In summary the perfect property for a relaxing holiday in Provence...particularly suited to families but anyone seeking a peaceful, private property with all amenities in a beautiful setting will love it.
It was our best holday ever and we shall be recommending it to our friends !

What an amazing back garden

Review Submitted: July 27, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
We took this house for 2 weeks and could not get over how beautiful the area was. The house is well set up for families and the kitchen is fabulously equipped which made holiday cooking really easy and enjoyable. Bedrooms stay really cool. The pool is really clean and there are lots of gizmos which look after everything else! We took bikes to take advantage of the trails in the area and the local town has great facilities and very friendly to the le rosbif.

Beautiful villa

Margaret and Steve Marlborough, Wiltshire, England
Review Submitted: June 26, 2008 Date of Stay: April 2008
This is a very fine villa, very well appointed (great kitchen) and beautifully furnished. 4 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, is ideal for 4 couples. The villa is in its own large grounds surrounded by woods, very secluded and with the sun available at all times of the day. We didn't try the large swimming pool, it was too early in the year to be warm enough, but it must be wonderful in the summer. The local help and the owners were all welcoming, efficient and responsive.
Provence is a beautiful and interesting part of France with plenty to do and see: Avignon and Arles are not far away by car, as are many smaller Provence towns and villages. Or you can just stay at the villa and relax.
We recommend this villa without reservation, and hope to return soon.
