Pembrey - Ashburnham Golf Club
You could play a different nearby course every day for a week when based in Pembrey. Let’s start with the course that the House Beside The Park overlooks: Ashburnham. This is the demanding seaside venue where the great Welshman and winning Ryder Cup Captain, Dai Rees won the PGA title in 1959. It has long been regarded as one of the best links courses in Britain. If this is your first visit to Ashburnham, it won't take you long to appreciate why. Ahead of you stretches a pleasurable test of your shot-making ability.
Machynys Golf and Country Club
Just five miles away from your holiday base is the Jack Nicklaus-designed Machynys. A modern links championship golf course, Machynys Peninsula has been created to challenge the best players in championship conditions - and yet still be enjoyable for the higher handicapper, by utilising up to five tees per hole. Son Gary Nicklaus has identified some of his favourite and most challenging holes as the 4th, 5th, 16th, and 18th. He says: “The view from the greens of the whole bay is spectacular, whether the tide is in or out.' 'We were blown away by its splendour, Machynys is the finest new course and a contender for the highest new entry in Golf World’s top 100 courses in Britain and Ireland' - Golf World 2005
Other golf favourites
From the house, you can see the Gower Peninsula. That’s where you’ll find Pennard. The holes are routed over classically undulating and tumbling linksland, full of hummocks, hillocks and hollows and pocked with dunes large and small; in sum, exactly what we might hope to find beside the shore. Yet this exceptional terrain is not beside the shore - It is 200 feet above it. No wonder Pennard has been called 'the links in the sky.' A short 4 mile drive from the house takes you to Glyn Abbey. It’s on the southern slope of the Gwendraeth valley and set amidst a woodland area with tremendous views in all directions. This is another relatively new course, characterised by its wide undulating fairways. The 18 hole par 70 course is 6,202 yards in length and has been built to international standards. There are some tremendous holes to test even the lowest handicap golfer. Each hole has its own character and requires considerable thought.
Other Activities Motorsports, horse racing, ten-pin bowling, rugby, dry-slope skiing, fruit-picking
