Our farmhouse, which is surrounded by vines and sunflowers, is on the edge of the tranquil village of Les Vignes, which lies on the Charente/Charente-Maritime border in the heart of Cognac country, just 5 minutes from Matha and 15 minutes from Cognac. Les Bouleaux, which sleeps 4 to 6 people, is set in over 3 acres of former vineyards and is at one end of a beautiful Charentaise long house, which is separated from the owner’s property by a large barn, assuring your privacy. The gite has been fully restored to a high standard and has its own sunny southwest facing private patio which looks across the gardens to a beautiful terraced 8 x 5 metre swimming pool for your sole use, where you can while away the hours soaking up the sun. The pool is fully fenced with a lockable security gate for your safety. Alternatively if you decide you would like an early or late break, for your extra comfort, the gite has full oil fired central heating, if needed, for those slightly cooler evenings.

Les Vignes is located 20 kilometres east of St. Jean d'Angely and 15 kilometres north of Cognac. The small town of Matha, which offers two restaurants and bars, various shops, supermarkets, three boulangeries and several banks, is only five minutes away by car. There is also a restaurant/bar, boulangerie and post office at the next village of Breville which is just a few minutes away. Alternatively if you would like to sample local produce a short stroll away our neighbours have been running a small family business for many generations producing Cognac, Pineau des Charentes (a blend of Cognac and grape juice) and local wines.

| Notes: | The accommodation comprises a spacious lounge/dining room which includes a table and chairs for six people, there is a sofa bed for two people as well as two settees. There is also a television with English channels and a radio/CD player. Leading off the dining area is a fully equipped kitchen comprising a fridge/freezer, gas cooker and microwave. Completing the accommodation downstairs is a luxuriously large shower room with a toilet, washbasin and washing machine. On the first floor there are two large bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two single beds. There is also a second bathroom with a bath, toilet and washbasins. Outside there is a private patio which looks west straight into the setting sun across the garden and onto the 8 x 5 metre swimming pool, which has its own patio where you can while away the hours quietly relaxing. Patio furniture, sun loungers and a barbeque are all provided. There are four adult bicycles available for your use free of charge. |
Area
The Charente-Maritime has its own micro-climate and has the second most recorded hours of sunshine per year in France. There are many towns worth visiting, Cognac is only 15 minutes away, a must for you to visit with its major Cognac houses of Hennessy, Martell, Remy Martin, Camus and Otard, as well as the parks, shops and many restaurants for you to enjoy. The historic towns of Saintes, 35 minutes away and Angoulême, 45 minutes away, are both worth a visit. Saintes with its famous Roman Amphitheatre and Angoulême an old fortress town which stands at the top of a hill. Angoulême also has a TGV station with Paris only 2½ hours away by train. About 60 minutes west are the costal towns and beaches of Royan, Rochefort and La Rochelle. The latter with its historic port and seafood restaurants. Or if you prefer not to travel there is a lake and sandy beach with a restaurant at the next village of Thors just a few minutes away. Bordeaux and Futuroscope are only slightly further afield.
Golf Courses in the area
For those of you who fancy a game of golf there are six 18-hole golf courses all within an hours drive - Angoulême, Cognac, Royan, Saintes, Niort and Mazieres-en-Gatien. Cognac and Royan both being championship courses and well worth a visit.
How to get here
We are well within a days driving distance of the western channel ports. St Malo being the nearest, closely followed by Caen, Le Havre and Cherbourg. Eurotunnel and short channel crossings to Calais are now only 6½ hours drive away with the opening of new motorway links. You can fly from many U.K. airports to La Rochelle which is approximately 60 minutes away or Bordeaux and Poitiers which are both approximately 90 minutes away. New for 2008 is Angoulême which is about 45 minutes away from us.
