La Quercia, is a beautifully refurbished and recently redecorated apartment in the 13th Century Castello di Gaiche. Close to Lake Trasimeno, Perugia, Tavernelle, Orvieto and the stunning hilll towns of Assisi and Cortona. It has a large double bed, a small fully fitted designer kitchen, and comfortable double sofa bed - sleeping up to four people. A separate bathroom has a shower and bidet. The gardens overlook the Nestore valley and afford a quiet and romantic location for enjoying the Umbrian countryside. The castle also has a large swimming pool, with sun loungers and showers for your enjoyment. The apartment is also double glazed and centrally heated with a log fire so should you choose visit during the cooler months you will not be cold. Fantastic for relaxing and exploring at any time of year, whether you want to relax by the pool or walk in the nearby woods or visit the local markets and medieval towns - Gaiche will enchant you.

Castello di Gaiche is positioned at the top of a hill overlooking the Nestore valley, some 18km south of Lake Trasimeno, 30km from Assisi and 18 km from the medieval capital city of Umbria, Perugia. Gaiche is centrally placed for art, history and architecture. The artist Perugino was born and died in Perugia, and both there and in many surrounding towns (including Città della Pieve and Panicale) are examples of his work. North Umbria was a central part of the ancient Etruscan empire; the Etruscan museum in Chiusi houses one of the best collections outside Rome. The exquisite pink-stoned town of Assisi is just under an hour away, while Siena, Florence and Rome and Pisa are all easy day trips, by car or train. Another tourist attraction is Lake Trasimeno, which offers water sports (wind-surfing, pedalos, yachts etc.)it is a very shallow, warm lake and great for families in the summer. A quick ferry service operates on the lake and to the 3 islands.

Recommendations: Castello di Gaiche is unique place for guests and we receive many repeat bookings from those who wish to explore Umbria and neaighbouring Tuscany enjoying its rich culture, food and wine. A number of different festivals and special occasions are a must such as the Umbria Jazz Festival usually in July and Umbria Winter in December - one of the oldest and best known jazz festivals in the world), Eurochocolate in October - the festival for all chocolate lovers), Pistoia Blues Festival Trasimeno Blues Summer and Christmas editions), and other local festivals such as: La Corsa dei Ceri - in Gubbio on May 15th; this is one of the oldest folk festivals in Italy, with its roots going back to the 1100's. Also worth a visit is La Quintana di Foligno - horse racing in the old medieval square of the city, L’infiorata di Spello (floral decorations made from flower petals and grasses on the city's streets) and not to forget the city of Montefalco which is renknowned for its wine.

Further afield...: A fantastic day out to southern Umbria can take you to the Val Nerina with its beautiful towns and the crypt at Ferentillo. Rome speaks for itself and you can either drive in or catch the train from Perugia (train travel in Italy is very reasonable), if you are visiting Italy in August try a day trip to Siena for the Palio horse race. October sees a variety of fesitvals in Umbria and Tuscany - chestnuts, funghi (mushrooms) and chocolate.
