Bluestone Country denotes the heart of the Pembrokeshire National Park where the spotted dolerite quarry on the ridge of the Preseli Mountains is the origin of stones used at Stonehenge some 180 miles away. Many layers of Legend, Mystery and Magic held in this beautiful landscape have inspired generations of poets and artists; Dylan Thomas, Waldo, and R.S. Thomas, among many. Many stone megaliths, cromlechs, dolmens, stone circles, and ancient sites can be visited locally. Also nearby are 11thC Celtic Crosses, Castles, an Iron Age Fort, Medieval churches, Ancient Woodlands of which one is a Special Site of Scientific Interest with over 500 lichens and mosses. A web of public footpaths take you from the property to the Coast, and up to the wild open moorland above. Ponies and sheep run wild and free over the heather covered hillsides of rocky outcrops. Nearby Hidden Treasures include Newport Beach, St. Brynach's Cave, Skomer Island (Puffin Watching), and St. David's Cathedral.

Half term in Pembrokeshire

Review Submitted: February 24, 2009 Date of Stay: February 2009
We had the most fantastic week staying at the Old Rectory and Retreat. The house was brilliantly situated and well equipped. Newport the local village was just great - delicious restaurants, great pubs and shops; especially the butcher!... You could get everything you need there although Fishguard had a Tesco. Loads to do and stunning beaches close by especially Traith (you can see it from the house). Thoroughly recommend staying here - terrific value and nothing seemed to be too much trouble.
Owner's Response: After 14 years of offering my treasured Old Rectory and Retreat Cottage as a holiday destination it always fills me with joy to read the guest book and witness so many happy people having such a wonderful time in this precious place. All the regulars that have come back over a 10 year period notice the improvements each year and love this place as their home.
As a team we wish to give the best service and we seem to attract such great people such as this family. Sharing this beloved coastline, area, town and house is such a rewarding adventure.
It is only found by a discerning few. Indeed there are more coves, beaches and mountain paths than places to stay. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park will keep it that way.
We invite all new and returning guests to a warm welcome at our Old Rectory and Retreat Cottage that can accommodate a luxury Cottage for 2 or up to 14 in the Rectory, or larger group up to 18 in both properties.
Please email or call anytime for us to help you have a great time. Deanna, Colin and Gillie

Wild and Magical

G.H Derbyshire, England
Review Submitted: December 19, 2008 Date of Stay: November 2008
Wow! This has been such a great escape for us. To get out of the city into this incredible wild landscape. We were really able to get calm here and take a breather from it all.
We adventured during the day, and spent evenings around the woodstove in your cosy inglenook. Walking along the cliffs just down the road was so invigorating. The coast path just keeps going. The ever changing lanscape, the sun and blustery wind. Everything is so wild here. The woods just up from your house are incredible too. There is a real sense of magic there. So many bluebells, little winding trees, and bubbling strems. im sure that there must be some elves living there. You have done an amazing job of preserving the charachter of this new place, but accommadating our modern needs. i can see why the national tourist board awarded you 4 stars. You have provided everything we need and more, at higher standards than we could have expected, but it has been so much more than that. It has been a real taste of the wild, and an escape to the magical. Thank You! We WILL be back.
