La Croix offers a comfortable base to explore one of the most beautiful parts of the Dordogne.The garden is filled with Evening primrose, Hollyhocks and Buddleia which attract many butterflies, notably Swallowtail. The spacious balconies allow ample room to eat al fresco with a commanding view as the sun sets over rolling countryside. Aubeterre, one of 'Les beaux villages de France' is only 15 minutes drive away. It has great historical interest and has its own beach on the river Dronne. There are many good restaurants within easy reach and Riberac market on a Friday morning is essential!!! The accomodation is in two very separate areas, suitable for families and friends, but also can be entirely independant. The farmhouse can accommodate 4 comfortably and the small gite is ideal for 2, with the option of a third on a 'put you up' if required. La Croix is excellent for relaxing 'away from it all' with beautiful countryside. An artists paradise.

The farmhouse has a large traditional kitchen with a table that would seat 8 comfortably. There is a door through to a double bedroom on the ground floor with ensuite shower and wc. You also walk from the kitchen into a spacious and comfortable sitting room with French window that leads onto a north facing balcony on which there is ample room to lay a table for al fresco dinner as the sun sets away to the west. A staircase leads up to a big double bedroom which is the entire width of the farmhouse with a west facing large opening circular window at the gable end. The great pleasure of La Croix is its situation nestling against the top of a ridge with commanding views over the patchwork landscape. It is possible to enjoy the sunshine in the front garden on a variety of recliners and comfortable furniture surrounded by the scented shrubs and plants that abound. Enjoying a glass of wine or a meal on the balcony particularly in the evening as the sun sets is a special pleasure.

Perigueux, 45 minutes drive is the capital of the Dordogne. The medieval part of the town comes alive on Wednesdays and Sturdays when local artisans display their first-class produce, including cured meats, truffles, foie - gras and pies or 'pates de Perigueux'. La Cite, once a pivotal Gallo - Roman site of Versunna, is also worth a foray. If you walk up the hill from La Cite you'll come to the Cathedrale St. Front which proved to be a trial run for the architect Abadie who later went on to design the Sacre - Couer in Paris. Angouleme, a cathedral city, used to be dominated by paper mills but now has a thriving tourist industry.The old town occupies a high steep sided plateau overlooking a bend in the Charente. It has many charms. Brantome, the Venice of the Perigord, is surrounded by a loop in the River Dronne. The towns pride is its Benedictine Abbey. Brantome is a must see as is St. Emillion, although a one and a half drive to the south is well worth the experience.

Enchanting Le Croix

Le Croix is, without a doubt, a magical place!
We stayed there for a week last October and the only unfortunate thing was the weather! This is a place to really enjoy in the sunshine where you can potter around the slightly shambolic but delightful garden and fall into one of the many seats dotted around, or sit on the wooden balcony, and soak up the peace and spectacular landscape. The house is a lovely eccentric mixture of the kind of creative charm that you might find in Country Living mgazine put together by a young artist and with enough personal details to make you feel 'at home' rather than in a 'holiday let'.
The countryside around is stunning with rolling fields and a great open landscape. Aubeterre is an enchanting small village nearby that caters well for visitors with cafes and restaurants. Don't miss the amazing monolithic church hewn from a single block of rock. It is spectacular!

Sara is a welcoming host who lives nearby during the letting season. She was around often enough to offer local guidance but we felt the place was our own during our stay.

My only small critism would be that it would be nice to have more books and CDs .....and maybe not have a TV, but this is a very personal view. Le Croix is a tranquil haven in which to immerse yourself in the joys of the countryside.
Owner's Response: I was delighted to receive this positive review of 'La Croix' (not 'Le Croix'). I am building up a collection of DVDs and CDs but I often find my visitors like to bring a few of their own favourites and of course the comment about the TV is very personal as guests are often 'newsaholics' - or want a complete 'away from it all' switch off. Children love their TV and DVDs - particularly on the odd day when the weather is inclement. I like to make my guests feel at home but do not intrude on the privacy of their holiday but am to hand if needs be.

Romance and tranquility at it's best

I stayed at the farmhouse for a week-end retreat and it was just idyllic. I would totally recommend this beautiful farmhouse for it's location, tranquility, space, comfort and charm. Sara was a lovey host who made us feel very welcome indeed and the meal that was arranged for us, was just perfect. Very private and a special place to relax, unwind and get away from it all.
