A rural road brings you to a renovated ‘casale’ right at the seafront. It is surrounded by the bright green of the wild Sicilian vegetation, including lemon trees and eucalyptus trees. The country house is situated on a volcanic cliff between Acireale and Praiola, and has a sweeping view over the sea, the beach and the coast with Taormina on the horizon. A private path leads directly to the beach that distances only 50 m. The country house is separated in two independent apartments. Casa Mandarino consists of a spacious kitchen with a dining table, a bathroom with shower, bidet and toilet, a double room, a living room with a bunk bed and a sofa bed. Both rooms give access to one of the two terraces, with table, seating, deckchairs and barbeque. Indoor and outdoor living combine seamlessly due to the bright rooms and their communication with the terraces.

Praiola is an excellent base from which to explore eastern Sicily. It is halfway between Catania and Taormina and just seven kilometres from Acireale (a pretty little city, built on a plateau of lava, that is known for its Baroque churches). Gardini Naxos, a seaside resort with beautiful sandy beaches, is just 20 kilometres from Praiola. Beside it we find Taormina ‘the pearl of the Mediterranean’ and the most exclusive seaside resort in Sicily. Its ancient Greek theatre is world famous for its extraordinary panoramic views. Santa Maria la Scala and Aci Trezza are pleasant fisherman's villages near Praiola. In the village Santa Tecla, a few kilometres from Praiola, is the renown, but quiet cheap, fish restaurant “Da Lorenzo”. 2 km from Casa Praiola is the big supermarket 'Ciemme'. Also 2 km from the house is Carubba, a town, with several shops and squares. Casa Praiola is also an excellent base from which to explore vulcano Etna and its villages, like Trecastagni and Zafferana Etnea.

Mount Etna - skiing on a volcano: Praiola is also an excellent base from which to explore Mount Etna and its surroundings. The villages of Etna, such as Trecastagni, Zafferana Etnea e Randazzo, are famous for their ancient lava flows, the architecture of their seventeenth century churches, their delicious local produce and the hospitality of the villagers. Situated 700 metres above sea level, they are a favourite retreat of the city dwellers who, in summer are in search of cool, fresh air, while in winter are in search of snow for skiing. Few people are aware that Etna is a popular location for skiers in winter. On some glorious days in winter, it’s even possible to ski the frozen slopes in the morning enjoying a wonderful panoramic view of the Mediterranean, and then, the same afternoon, go and sunbathe on the beaches below!

Good, lovely, nice, sympathetic

Casa Praiola offers good facilities in a lovely environment. I would recommend this really nice property to friends, and others as well. Rosario and Carmen are very sympathetic hosts: they picked us up by scooter at the exit of the highway to bring us to their casa, where they invited us for a welcome drink (limoncello, off course) and gave us typical Sicilian almond cookies. A car is necessary to get to the casa and to get around. On the second day Rosario and Carmen offered us ice cream in the evening and provided suggestions for daytrips. The accomodation was spacious for the three of us, and a family of four will also find it comfortable. Details that emphasize the care of the owners: freshly picked lemons on the dining table, plenty of kitchen utensils in the cupboard, many local and regional tourist brochures & information, mosquito screens so you can leave the terrace doors open at night. Even the neighbours were very nice: we had good contact with the owners of the old little farm barn next door. We loved our cappuccini and croissants in the village café of nearby Carruba, we visited the very agreeable city of Acireale a couple of times (heavenly ice cream in Caffè del Corso), took a dive in Santa Maria La Scala, went inland to Sant'Alfio (the ancient tree 'Castagno dei cento cavalli' and dinner in the lovely Casa Perrotta - follow the signs) and plunged into the Gole di Alcantara. Catania, Mount Etna, Giardini Naxos and Taormina are not far away. We enjoyed 'our' beach every day. Although it's not private actually, the pebbled beach feels private and is frequented by Sicilians mainly. It wasn't crowded, by the way. Thanks to Alessio (son of the neighbours) our four-year-old son is now a bodyboarder. Yes, we had a wonderful week in Casa Praiola.
