Photos and Description of this Santa Maria di Licodia holiday farmhouse the whitewashed house is contrasted by the bright green of the wild vegetation

A rural road brings you to this whitewashed house, which is sharply contrasted by the bright green of the wild Sicilian vegetation. The landscape surrounding the accommodation is characterised by antique lava flows and thousands of prickly pear cacti, called “ficodindia”. The pool is in use from the 1st April to 31 October. The property consists of a spacious kitchen, two bathrooms and an enormous living-room (about 80sq. metres), which, thanks to two mezzanines, functions also as a bedroom. This system therefore offers three double bed spaces in the same room. Due to the presence of two large fireplaces, the accommodation lends itself for use in both autumn and winter. Many people are unaware that Etna is a popular skiing resort in the winter months. On some glorious days in winter, it’s even possible to ski the frozen slopes in the morning enjoying a wonderful panoramic view of the Mediterranean, and then go and sunbathe on the beaches below the same afternoon!

We spent wonderful days here

The Rudersbergers Germany, near Stuttgart
Review Submitted: September 16, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
A super location for people who like rustical accommodation and luxurious vegetation. We found a charming kitchen with amiable details, a large living- and sleepingroom affectionately and attractively renovated, a shady terrasse with a grillstation and even a pizzaoven. All was clean, nothing failed and the only thing we missed was a weekly towel-exchange. The highlight of the location is the swimming-pool right on the highest point of the acienda and with a grandiose view wide over the valley and the chains of mountains behind. Every evening a wonderful sunset, which you can watch from there. All around the house ficidindias as far you can see and giving an exotic touch. In the distance the majestic Etna, sometimes seen in his clear beauty and sometimes hidden by always changing clouds.
We stayed with our two boys, eleven and fourteen years old, and we enjoyed mendolito so much that we reduced our excursionprogramm. We have many experiences with holiday homes in different countries. Mendolito was one of our best location. Unfortunately the pictures in the offer were shot some years back. Now there ist more vegetation, more greens and flowers around the house.
Thanks to Michaela and her husband for the friendly welcome and their helpful hints.

Arriving late in the evening after a dark drive from palermo airport we got a warm welcome at Mendolito from Michaela and pippo.
Waking up in the morning we could not believe our eyes !
The feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by only cactusplants and with this astonishing view of the mount etna all day long !
The quietness of the surrounding, the astonishing view from the pool over the country and always being overlooked by the vulcano with snow on top , while we were in 35 °.

The house was clean and comfortable, although kicthen could have been a bit better equipped. Bathrooms were nice, but a few extra towels would have been welcome, as they were really short and coming in by flight you cannot take all of this in your luggage.

The house and surrounding terrace, pool were really charming, no great luxury, but we felt like living on the country side again !
Nature, pool and view are really to recommend !
From mendolito we made trips to Syracuse, Catania, Taormina,
the island Lippari and of course mount Etna.

The nearest village Santa maria Lucodia is not worth to be visited and restaurants near were hard to find. But we enjoyed coming home in the evening and cook a nice meal in the lovely rustique kitchen and sit on the terrace at night.

We found piece and quietness here in this little house and for us it was an ideal starting point for our visits in this lovely country.
Thanks a lot to Michaela and Pippo for their warm hospitality !

Villa Mendolito

Mick and Jacky Bassoues, France
Review Submitted: October 16, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
Mendolito is grim and apart from looking over the cacti at Mount Etna the surroundings do not lend themselves to a holiday environment. The barn as it is described does not match the reality. The setting, near Santa Maria di Licondia is depressing and surrounded by rubbish. Our first impression was that we had made a dreadful mistake in going to Sicily but the area seemed to be worse than any other area we visited on the island. Nowhere else was so badly run down, with so much rubbish alongside the roads; and we drove 2000 km visiting most of the island.

The drive up to Mendolito was awful through a gate you had to lock behind yourselves, into the cactus grove and up an unmade road through the dense cacti. Arriving at the house it looked like a fortification, with steel doors and shutters and opposite was a run down building with rubbish outside it.

Rustic, in terms of holiday accommodation, can be fairly easily understood, commonly as plain and simple, unsophisticated having the charm of the country. Therefore one does not expect a bath which has lost its enamel coating, a shower with the plaster mouldy and rotting, poorly done shoddy woodwork and concrete floors, the kitchen area smelt of sewage and although the barn was clean it was in very poor condition. The beds were as described on a mezzanine in the main room but we did not expect just 2 cheap mattresses on the floor and barely room to sit up. The depressing terrace area was no place to sit out and a pool badly needed repainting, re-pointing and cleaning. The pool was high in chlorine and green with algae.

The owner was kind but we did not know she was the owner and would have complained immediately to her so we went through the agent with whom we had done the initial booking. His attitude to our problems was that it was all our fault but he did arrange to move us to a very nice apartment in Taormena but we had to pay an extra €200 to do this. We are still unhappy that we had to pay extra but the holiday was lovely despite our first experiences. Taormena was beautiful and apart from knowing that you cannot park in the village and have to take your selves and your luggage up to the apartment by bus and foot (up a great number of stairs), there are no drawbacks. We would highly recommend Taormena to anyone over 50 without children. We saw the other reviews of Mendolito and really cannot agree with any of them so therefore would not recommend this property to anyone.
Owner's Response: I am really sorry when reading negative feedback. But I am also dissappointed when I discover that travelers make a wrong choice and then complaint about all kind of things that have nothing to do with the house. At first, the title of the feedback starts ironically with "Villa Mendolito". We never suggested it to be a villa. In fact our title is "Barn with pool", and then describing precisely: "A rural road brings you to this whitewashed house". We cannot change the architecture of an ugly village nearby. There are many other beautiful villages also within a 20 minutes drive. The house is not at all surrounded by rubbish. There is rubbish 2 km away, close to the village SM di Licodia, but the house is in the midst of the country side surrounded by palm trees and pear cacti. When we spoke to the guests about a solution, we offered an expensive luxury apartment of which they should have paid just one third and we the rest. They thanked as a lot and told us that they liked the new place. After the holiday, they wanted their contribution back, even if they liked very much the alternative. We are always willing to face negative feedback and to resolve problems instantly also during the holiday, but I am armless in responding to complaints based on the fact someone doesn't like the type of accommodation (in this case rustic, but on a unique location, beautiful landscpae with pool, for low price). The only "obbligation" clients that book on the internet have is to read well the description and the feedback of former guests and to take a careful look of the pictures. The responsability of the owner is that the house is clean and that everything is functional and that the house meets the reasonable expectation of its renters.

Rustic holiday break

gallagher london
Review Submitted: September 24, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
Apart from flights being so delayed and the electric not working for the first 3 days it was great to finally get to the villa we booked. The owner put us up in another accomadation untill the electric were fixed, it was very pleasent and quiet, after all thats the reason we rented our own private villa. The owner was really nice and very very helpfull, and made the experience a better one. The house itself was very rustic and gorgeous but I'd definately make sure you have transport if your looking to go and explore fully because you are literally surrounded by nothing apart from beautiful views which isn't a bad thing. The property was clean when we arrived. And it was brilliant to have the pool to ourselves and no distractions.Overall a realy nice experience and would rent again as long as we had a car so that we could get the beaches, even though we knew it was a very remote part of the villiage. Least we had the views of Mount Etna shining in the evenings. Excellent customer service.

Rustic Holiday in Siciliy

Sime Kent
Review Submitted: September 2, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
Lovely people, very helpful, great Pizza night! The weather was very hot, the barn stays hot and hard to cool - needs aircon! Its very rustic up the farm track, surrounded by Cactus upto 12 feet high! View of Etna is magnificent, pool is perfect. Location good, need a hire car.Beware of midges - many and potent take precautions from day one! Ultimately very relaxing, rural holiday to look back on.
