  • The Forester sits on Gillies Hill and history lies everywhere .
The very name proclaims its most enduring link with
the past : the gillies – the Gaelic word gille refers to
a servant, or young boy - were the camp-followers
of Bruce’s army in 1314. These he ordered, for
safety, onto the long sloping hill above where
he raised his standard at the Borestone. Legend
has it that these sma folk, as they were termed by
the poet Barbour, made a dramatic and decisive
intervention at a crucial stage in the battle. Banging
their pots and pans, waving bits of cloth like fl ags,
they descended onto the fi eld of Bannockburn – to
English eyes, fresh, unwearied Scottish troops. Or
maybe they simply saw the carnage was nearly
over, and wanted their share of the spoils.
Bruce is said to have come to Cambusbarron
Chapel the day before the battle, a Sunday, to there
take the sacrament, and to drink from its renowned
Holy Well – and gets its name-Bruce Memorial Church

Further details for this holiday apartment rental in Stirling & Falkirk area, United Kingdom

CAMBUSBARRON: The Foresters 2 Murray Place is in the center of a thriving village and ajoins Gillies Hill

Gillies Hill, a piece of land on the outskirts of Stirling which played a pivotal role in the Battle of Bannockburn. The hill played its part in Scotland’s history when Robert the Bruce’s troops rested there on the eve of the Battle of Bannockburn, in 1314.

Seconds from your front door you will find Cambusbarron main street and most things you need on a self catering holiday,

the paper shop for all the gossip a Post Office to send those post cards a hairdressers a quality butcher and of course Foresters The Village Pub.

You cant miss the impressive spire of The Bruce Memorial Church, don't set your watch by its clock but do rely on the Sunday Sermon being a sell out.

A few yards on the Cambusbarron Community Hall overlooks a great play park with a paddling pool and lots of things to entertain the kids.

Ski:

Glen Coe Mountain Resort 72 mile

Glen Shee 75 miles

Anoch Mor 120 miles

Aviemore 125 mile

Golf:

Scotland boasts over 550 courses of high quality and great diversity with St Andrews, Muirfield, Carnoustie, Royal Troon , Turnberry and Glen Eagles all within easy reach.

If you like history with your golfin break, then Stirling is the place to go. Set below the castle parapets is an excellent 18 hole course.

Only a short drive, will take you to many worthy tests such as Dunblane

New.Bridge of Allan Golf Course, set above this delightful town, offers a climb on several holes but the vista over the Ochil's is just a reward.

This is an area of golfing education and Stirling University even has its' own 9 hole golf course built beneath the inspiring edifice of the Wallace Monument.

For a golf outing with a difference, try the Brucefield Family Golf Centre near Bannockburn.

The Falkirk area is a distinctive golfing region in itself and offers a variety of venues.

One of the best courses in the area is undoubtedly Glenbervie, scene of several amateur championships, very much a fine parkland tract secluded with lots of trees and a tendency to undulation.

Fantastic central location to paraglide in Scotland, happy to advise on best sites

Had a wonderful trip

Review Submitted: May 18, 2011 Date of Stay: May 2011
This is a wonderful place to stay. It is centrally located, the property is very clean and comfortable. There is a pub downstairs that serves delicious food ond Friday-Sunday. If you are worried about noise you do not even realize the pub is there. Bob and Catherine are great. This is a true find.

The Perfect Introduction to Scotland

Review Submitted: June 6, 2010 Date of Stay: April 2010
We had a splendid week in Cambusbarron. The flat was even nicer and larger than we had expected (and we had ten people in our party). This is a fantastic location for exploring central Scotland. We enjoyed our time at the Wallace Monument, Stirling Castle, Dumbarton Castle, Loch Lomond, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and could easily have gone further on daytrips.

Having the pub right there was fantastic -- and the butcher across the street is excellent. With a playground around the corner, and a grocer across the street, we found Cambusbarron to be the perfect way to begin our time in Scotland. Highly Recommended

The perfect spot!

Review Submitted: May 18, 2010 Date of Stay: May 2010
The property was an extremely great value! The cleanliness, location and the property owners availability to our questions and requests were superb. I would recommend this property to anyone visiting Scotland as the location was very central and easy to drive to Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Highlands. The age of our party of 5 ranged from 38 to 68 years old and everyone had a great time. I will be using this apartment (if it is available) when I return in 2012!!

Our Hogmany in Cambusbarron

Review Submitted: January 8, 2010 Date of Stay: December 2009
The apartment is well equipped and extremely cosy.
The bedrooms were large, light and airy.
Kitchen had everything we needed including a magnificent oven and hob and led through to a nice dining room where we enjoyed several nice meals. The sitting room was large and comfortable and Bob very kindly got some coal for us to a light a nice fire in the hearth - not that we needed the heat because the apartment was very well heated indeed. The bathrooms are both brand new.
We were a bit worried that the pub might be noisy at the end of the night, but we honestly never heard a thing!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can certainly recommend this as lovely place to stay!

Great Location

Review Submitted: October 31, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
Cambusbarron is a perfect place to stay. It is a nice little village just outside of Stirling. The property was clean and fresh flowers were there upon our arrival. The owners go out of their way to provide for all of your needs. The butcher, the post office, grocery store are within a block. Mothers walking their children to school were seen every morning. Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument are nearby. The flat is so large and would have accommodated many more than the four of us, since there were 4 large bedrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen. The laundry room was an added bonus. The pub below the flat made it fun and easy to get to know both the owner and the people in the village. We can't think of a better place to stay in Scotland!
