Yarmouth is located on the western side of the Island at the mouth of the Yar estuary, well placed for walks and West Wight beaches. The historic little town is guarded by Yarmouth Castle, built by Henry VIII in 1547 The Harbour attracts international yachts, motor cruisers and veteran boats which arrive for festivals to enjoy the lively range of shops, and places to eat and drink in the town. Wightlink Ferries dock here from Lymington, after a crossing of just under half an hour.
The picturesque narrow streets and town square are lined by flower decked shops and pubs; restaurants range from Michelin star quality through family-friendly pubs to cafes with outside tables for celebrating fine weather late into the evening, many meals having an emphasis on local produce and freshly caught fish
Boats leave the harbour for fishing trips in the Solent and off the Needles, but for those preferring to stay in touch with shore; the listed wooden pier is a great place to go fishing.
