Photos and Description of this Limoux holiday apartment 2 two bedroom apartments in the foothills of Cathar country, near the airport.

Two charming self-catering apartments beautifully renovated in a fine historic building, parts of which may be 1000 years old. Using our skills as an artist and cabinet-maker we have laboured for many years to bring out the best of this unique house, once the dwelling of an aristocratic family, whilst keeping a warm and welcoming feel to make your stay relaxing and comfortable for adults and children. In the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains, Limoux is ideally placed for walking and exploring the many medieval abbeys and castles that are found nearby. The famous Cité de Carcassonne is close, and Toulouse with its many museums is an easy day-trip away. In winter the there are ski slopes easily accessible, and wonderful mountain climbing all year round. Limoux itself is renowned for its Blanquette, the 'original' champagne, and for its 3-month carnival, the longest that exists. You can walk along the river to the restaurants of the town, and all services that you might need are close.

Details for Swallow Apartment 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4, 1 Bathroom

Set in the oldest building of Limoux (somewhat romantically known as the King of Aragon's house - unproven, but ceratinly it has aristocratic origins) we spent many years restoring this fine old building with our own hands. With our skills of cabinet maker and painter-artist we worked together to bring out the best of this fascinating building, and its many unique features. The first floor apartment has been completely rebuilt to make a lovely holiday space for up to 4 people. There are 2 bedrooms, the main one overlooking the river and the other which we call the Maid's room on the other side of the building. There is a fully equiped kitchen with good modern appliances, a dining area and a balcony overlooking the courtyard. The main bedroom is large enough to double up as a living area with satellite T.V; DVD and internet connection.

Limoux is the centre of a wine producing area that is rapidly gaining status for its BLANQUETTE and other associated wines. Reputedly the production method is the original for champagne, and this fine sparkling wine was developed at the nearby Abbey of St.Hilaire. There are many caves in area interesting to visit, for both tasting and buying your wines. Market day is Friday, and Mirepoix and Esperaza host good markets on other days. The CARNIVAL lasts from January to Easter, every weekend. The Romanesque Abbeys are themselves fascinating to visit, both for their concerts and architectural details, notably featuring the sculptures of the MAITRE DE CABESTANY. Combined with the numerous CATHAR castles - places of legend and wild beauty, and the CITE DE CARCASSONNE, these alone can make for a rich visit. The beach is an hour away, as are the high mountains of the PYRENEES, with the ski slopes open in season. We love to walk, with a special interest in the very rich bird life.

Notes: Set on the river bank on the 'quiet' side of town a 5 minute walk along the water will take you to a bridge that crosses over to the main town, and the central square with its cafes and restaurants. All shops that you might need are available within walking distance, and good supermarkets are found 5 minutes drive away. The town's swimming pools are just 10 minutes walk away. There are both indoor and outdoor pools, the outdoor pool (only open in the hot months of the year) with a grass sitting area around it. We also recommend to our guests to drive to one of the lovely lakes in the nearby hills, which are set-up for swimming access, and enjoy the freedom of swimming in the surroundings of forests and mountains. Next door to the town pool there are tennis courts, a Canoe/Kayack hire facility, a park and a children's play areas. There is off-road parking available behind the house, where your car can be safely parked. Living upstairs we are always on hand to advise and to help.

Winter breaks, ski and sight-seeing.: Being in town and near Carcassonne airport, the Maison de Lali is very suitable for winter breaks. The sun shines here throughout much of the year - we have known it to be 24° centigrade in the January. There is a full sized golf course (with an excellent bistro and top-class restaurant) less than half an hours' drive away on the Limoux side of Carcassonne. The nearest ski slope is at Camurac about 1 hour away, with Les Angles, Pyrenees 2000 and Andorra easily accessible for a day's skiing. The Cathar castles are wonderful at any time of year, and a visit to the Mediterranean sea is always stimulating. There are good art galleries in Toulouse, Ceret and Sigean, and the famous carnival of Limoux lasts for 13 weeks staring in january. Of course, there is always the wine of the region to sample, and especially Blanquette of Limoux, the 'original' champagne.

Bird Watching in the Aude: Jonathan is a keen bird-watcher and a member of the steering committee of the League de Protection d'Oiseaux de L'Aude. He is happy to give advice as to local spotting, and will also accompany groups if available. The Aude is very rich in avifaun, mainly because of the multiplicity of variation in habitat, ranging from the coastal wetlands to the high mountains, with moorland, river valleys and forests in between. There are about 200 nesting species recorded in the Aude, with some very special rarities amongst them; Egyptian Vulture, lesser Grey Shrike, Eagle Owl, just to name a few that could be of interest to U.K. birders. The coastal wetland at Gruissan is the migration corridor of France, with birds funnelled between the Mediterranean sea and the high mountains of the Pyrenees. There were over 27000 raptors recorded in 2007, and it is also interesting for overwintering species.

Guests comments.: 'your home is amazing and has everything we needed to make for an incredibly comfortable and relaxing vacation. We can't express enough how much your generosity meant to us. Indeed, you helped make our trip very memorable!!' B.&C.Love, Saratoga Springs N.Y. 'You have obviously worked hard to restore this lovely building, retaining its' character for future generations. The setting is stunning......' C.&P.Dickenson, Hereford, U.K. 'Staying here is like living in a painting. The building itself, so rich in history and strength of character, provides a feeliong of peace and tranqulility'. B.Jackson, Texas. 'Angèle and Jonathan - what an amazing experience we have had staying in your home by the river. Full of stories and so much history! Thank you for your warm welcome and interesting conversations'. Family Trussell, Sydney Australia.

Other Activities: Bird watching, wine tasting, golf, caving, hill walking, visiting abbeys and Cathar castles

Superb Location

Nicole & Bill France
Review Submitted: December 17, 2008 Date of Stay: February 2008
We stayed for a week in February and we couldn't have wished for a more comfortable and welcoming stay. The apartment is warm and cosy and has some lovely features which show Jonathan and Angele's skills as artists. We loved being able to walk into town within 2 minutes and having the view of the river right outside our bedroom window. All in all we would very much recommend it.

Verblijf in prachtig historisch pand Limoux

Liesbeth, Eva en Peter Breda, Nederland
Review Submitted: November 16, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009

Fantastic situation in Limoux

Thing Wargrave, Berks, UK
Review Submitted: October 22, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We stayed with Jonathan and Angele for a week in August, and it was a super experience. A more sociable and helpful couple you couldn't hope to meet - having an English speaking landlord who knows the area inside out is a real plus point. The apartment is fantastic - Angele's decorations make it unique. Very comfortable and quiet,
(and pristinely clean!) and being right on the river is lovely. It's also in the middle of a brilliant area - nothing is too far away to do in a day. And being able to stroll into Limoux in the evenings and not worry about drinking and driving made a big difference to us! Lovely lovely place - we will be going back if they'll have us!

Fehrienwohnung der ganz besonderen Art

Kutterjule Windischeschenbach, Bayern, Deutschland
Review Submitted: October 12, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009

Enchanting apartment and hosts.

Marc and Rach Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
Review Submitted: July 15, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We recently (June 2009) spent a week in this attractive apartment in Limoux. What a stroke of luck to find such a interestingly renovated spot. Jonathan and Angele have transformed this 13th century property into a delightful living area with ample examples of their works of art in the construction, cabinets and art pieces throughout. There is plenty of space, a large bathroom and kitchen and a great view of the river and local ducks. Even their selection of books and music is interesting.

Limoux and the the region of the Aude provide pleasant experiences for anyone seeking history, wineries, beautiful countryside, relaxing day trips, mountain treks and charming locals. Our hosts were very gracious and extremely helpful with plenty of suggestions, directions and maps. Theirs is an interesting story in itself and one should take the time to see what they have accomplished with this building. We thouroughly enjoyed our stay in Limoux and wished we had booked a longer stay in this apartment. We highly recommend this as a destination. We have been telling our friends and we plan on returning sometime in the near future.

Marc and Rachele - (Gatineau, Quebec, Canada).
