Cosy terraced house in Appleby, in the Eden Valley on the edge of Lake District

This is a cosy two bedroom terraced house in Appleby, offering self catering affordable accommodation, close to the very pretty railway station, with trains running over the stunning Settle and Carlisle line. We are close to the centre of this market town on the banks of the river Eden. This is a town that time forgot with a good selection of local shops, selling local produce. The surrounding area has some of the most beautiful countryside in England, but because it is close to the Lake District gets only limited tourists, so the roads are largely empty. Tumbling waterfalls, woodlands, rivers with fords abound on the country lanes, and the magnificent Pennine range in the distance. The house is newly refurbished with full central heating, with a wide screen tv with Free view and built in DVD. Ideal for a couple, or small family for that week away together. There is a small overlooked garden at the rear, and on street parking at the front. Given ****4 stars by Visit Britain

A quiet backwater on the edge of the Lake District in Cumbria, with stunning countryside. Also close to the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire moors and the Northumberland hills. Appleby is a market town, but Orton and Brough both nearby also have farmers markets once a month. If you want night life, and plenty of laid on entertainment, then Cumbria is possibly not the place for you. On the other hand if you want to relax amongst beautiful countryside, and shop in traditional shops selling local goods, and travel down sleepy country lanes, where you are likely to meet a herd of cows as another car, then this is the place for you. That being said there are some superb traditional pubs, many serving pub lunches, and we can recommend some excellent local restaurants for your evening meal. Carlisle is only an hour away if you fancy some retail therapy, you can either drive, or catch the train, the station is 2 minutes away.

Golf/Swimming

Appleby has a 18 hole golf course set in beautiful surroundings. Keep fit at Applebys swimming pool close to the town centre and within walking distance from the house. Close to Centre Parcs, where day passes are available if required.

Countryside

The Eden valley must be among one of the most beautiful and unspoilt places in England, close to the Lake District, it is often missed out by by tourists. Step back in time and enjoy traditional local shops, with the oldest chemist in the UK, a hardware shop, greengrocers, bakers, gift shops, and the butchers is one of the best you will find anywhere. The railway station is like something out of the Railway Children, with its own station master, and a real coal fire in the waiting room in the cooler months, but still has a regular train service, to Carlisle going north, and over the magnificent Settle and Carlisle railway going south to Leeds. Lots of traditional pubs, many serving food. Or for something different, a little distance away is a temperance pub, serving dandilion and burdcock, sasparella, and lemonade, plus delicious local ham and eggs.

Friendly

The 'Westmorland' people are some of the friendliest in the country, Most will smile and say hello, and the crime rate is very low.

Other Activities Don't miss the famous Horse Fair at the begining of June

Lovely place to stay

TWHE, Nottingham
Review Submitted: August 13, 2008, Date of stay: August, 2008

My husband, 1 year old son and myself stayed in the above house for a week in August 2008. We received a very warm welcome from the owners, along with lots of info about the surrounding area.
The house is very clean and well equiped, with just about everything you will need for a self catering break. There are places to eat and drink within easy walking distance if you don't want to be in the kitchen every evening, and the market towm of Appleby is very nice to stroll around.
The surrounding area is great and the house is well located for access to the lakes and the yorkshire dales, even centre parcs if you fancy a day there, our son loved it!
We had a lovely week and would not hesitate to recommend the house to anyone.

Owner's response:

Thanks so much for the lovely review. We are so glad you managed to enjoy the area, even though the weather was not so good. Thank you for the good comments about the house, we are sure positive reviews like this help the bookings!!
