Located on a hillside, overlooking a well known wine-producing valley in Pelau, Sardinia. This newly built property benefits from beautiful views on all sides and is a haven of tranquillity for any holidaymaker. The property is extremely spacious with large open plan living spaces and open terraces for most rooms. The property has been designed with the sun in mind - cool in summer but well lit and bright in the winter months. As we have a strong interest in being as eco-friendly as possible, the building has a number of features to try and minimise its impact on the environment. Property comprises 2 and 3 bedroom apartments that can also be rented as a 5 bedroom villa.

Extremely spacious internal floor area approx 160 sq.m. Main Bedroom 1 with large double bed, ensuite bathroom. Bedroom 2 with antique brass bed. Bedroom 3 with twin beds (plus camp bed if required). All bedrooms have veranda with views. Bedroom 1 with en suite bath, shower, basin and wc. Bedroom 2 and 3 share the main bathroom with antique roll-top bath, shower, 2 basins, wc and bidet. Fully equipped designer kitchen featuring oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and a complete range of cutlery, crockery and kitchen utensils. Large lounge/breakfast room with TV, DVD, stereo (with IPOD connector), games, books etc. Shaded veranda outside kitchen with table and chairs. Stunning circular veranda outside lounge which has views to 3 aspects. Woodburning stove for use in the winter months. Shared access to a laundry room with washing machine. Internal garage.

The local beaches (10 mins drive) are well known for their crystal clear water and long sandy stretches. Slightly further afield there are a large number of possible beach destinations - including extremely secluded beaches accessible by foot and gently sloping beaches for those with young children. Depending on the season there a number of activities possible. In summer the beach rules and there are boat trips up the coast. Authentic Italian ice cream is available in a number of places but Tortoli is our favourite. There are some beautiful local spots such as Santa Maria Navarrese and a drive up through the local mountains reveals some stunning views and excellent walking opportunities. There are some lovely limestone caves in nearby Ulassai which are lovely and cool in the summer months and have guided tours. The cantina in Jerzu is a must-visit for anyone who enjoys wine and if you come at the end of September you can witness the local grape harvest.

Notes: The property has been designed with the summer sun in mind. We have shutters and shaded balconies and rooms, plus dual aspect rooms to encourage ventilation. There is air conditioning available in all rooms but this should not be needed - although it can be used for heating in winter. Towels and linen included (excluding beach towels). Towels and linen changed weekly (extra cleaning is available by request and at extra cost). A shared laundry room and drying facilities are also available - not in the kitchen area so excluded from details there. There is a one-off cleaning charge per stay otherwise. Eco-wise the property has solar heated water, good wall and roof insulation, rainwater storage tanks which are used for toilet water supply, a 3kw solar electric generating facility on the roof and A or A+ rated appliances in the kitchens and laundries, plus dishwashers and washing machines that use water efficiently.

We stayed in the upper floor of Gumtrees for 12 nights August 2009. Two families with children 13, 2x17 and 19. The first thing to say is that the owners Carlo and Rita were brilliant. From booking to leaving and everything in between you couldnt wish to meet more helpful people. On arrival we were met with local foods and wines and soft drinks for the children. As we looked around the property we couldnt believe the standard of everything within and the amount of space all the rooms had, which with the balcony, the location and the friendliness shown by the local people made for a great stay.
The location is not isolated but is rural and peaceful. Beaches are within easy driving distance as are a few other sites. Dont go if you want a bustling seaside resort. Definately go if you want the most pefrect of properties, peace and quiet through day and night with brilliant views of the mountains around the area in an idyllic setting. The villa doesnt have a pool but with crystal clear waters a 10 minute drive away it didnt matter.
We used a couple of local restaurants and can recommend the list given by Carlo and Rita. Everything is as detailed in their website (re distances etc) and the area has some stunning scenery.
We have recommended the area, but more importantly the villa to many people since our return and are looking to return there hopefully next year.
Generally we found prices to be cheaper than in previous holiday resorts and few of the bars / cafes / restaurants spoke English but were all pleaseant and with a phrase book and willingness to try the staff, without fail, looked to help and make sure you enjoyed your visit.

Modern, spacious villa with superb country views

Immaculate, modern, spacious villa in a quiet and peaceful location on a hill with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. We had a wonderful holiday at Gumtrees. The villa was extremely well-equipped, with even beach umbrellas and snorkelling equipment in the garage that we were able to borrow. There was a spacious verandah for eating and relaxing outside whilst enjoying the views of the mountains and at night superb views of the stars. There were numerous beaches within an easy drive. All were easily accessible, you can park alongside the beach and so there's no need to walk far in the heat to claim your space beside the sea. My children swam in the sea every day, we couldn't keep them away from it. The water was so clear and so warm and there was no concept of high tide or low tide like we have in the UK.
For food, we found a large, well stocked supermarket near Tortoli` (about 20 mins drive). There are nearer shops but we found this one had the best choice of everything. In Cardedu (10 mins drive) there was a smaller supermarket, an excellent bakery for buying morning croissants and a pasta shop. Just at the end of the road from Gumtrees (so very convenient for take-aways) is a pizzeria which makes yummy Italian pizzas - we ate a lot of these!
The owners were extremely friendly and hospitable and made us feel very welcome - they had even left some food and wine for us when we arrived which was very much appreciated after our journey. In the kitchen there were all staple items provided - salt, pepper, olive oil, etc., cleaning products, dishwasher powder etc. - which was nice because you don't often find this at rental properties. There was also an abundance of towels, beach towels and spare linen for the beds which again was very nice because at some places you are just allocated one towel each.
I would definitely recommend this property to a friend, it's particularly good for those with small children looking for a relaxing, beach holiday in a quiet and peaceful location.
