Escape into rustic Chianti Rufina and enjoy the timeless pleasures of Tuscany - less than 30 min from Florence! This small group of buildings was once part of the first line of defences of Renaissance Florence. Now on a working vineyard, they have been converted to create an attractive villa and apartments. Situated in a prestigious Florentine estate which produces an impressive Chianti, there is a panoramic hilltop castle within walking distance. Florence is an easy train ride away, saving the headache of city parking. If you are travelling in a group of up to 5, select the tab for Villa, the converted barn with two spacious panoramic terraces, two double bedrooms and bathrooms. For 2 people, you can choose between Cipresso, a mini apartment with kitchenette, or Alba and Vista, which both have full kitchens and separate bedroom. All apartments have their own private terrace with views across the valley.

Elegant barn lovingly converted in 2007 - handmade terracotta floors, traditional beamed ceilings, furnished in fresh style using neutral tones. On two floors, it can accommodate 4 people in 2 bedrooms plus 1 on a sofa bed. It consists in two double bedrooms plus two bathrooms, a well- equipped kitchen with dining area, living room with open fireplace and two terraces. The layout is well suited to two couples sharing a holiday or a family with up to 3 children. Each floor has a bedroom (double beds that can be separated into twins), a bathroom, kitchen facilities and a terrace. Upstairs there is a fully equipped kitchen and dining room with with sitting area (this floor can be rented for two people alone - see the tab for 'Alba'). Downstairs, there is a spacious sitting room with fireplace and a hidden kitchenette making it possible to breakfast or dine independently. Every room has spectacular views and the two generous sized terraces catch the sun, morning to evening.

The 2 main airports in Tuscany (Pisa and Florence) are easily accessible . Short breaks are feasible all year round! You'll know you have made an escape from routine, though, when you drive down the winding approach road. You pass through vineyards with a historic castle and our property above you in the distance. You are now in the Nipozzano estate of the noble Florentine family of Frescobaldi. From your apartment, a pleasant walk, with superb views, will take you up to the castle. There the wine is aged in the historic cellars and you can taste and buy all Frescobaldi wines. Numerous other panoramic walks dot the area (the historic monastery of Vallombrosa is not far either). For renaissance culture, we are near Florence and Arezzo. Regular trains from Pontassieve station (5 minutes away) to central Florence take only 20-25 minutes. Alternatively, designer outlet discounts from Gucci, YSL, Todds etc are to be found at the Mall, outside Leccio, 15 minutes away.

  • Both bedrooms are good sized with wardrobes and bathrooms next door. They are on separate floors. Both catch the sun. The upstairs bedroom is bright and airy and has beautiful views and an traditional design barn window. The downstairs bedroom is cool and fresh at the back of the house, and looks onto the garden and olive trees and is furnished with original Florentine design wardrobe and chest of drawers. Both bedrooms have large double beds and can be separated into twin beds. The sitting room downstairs can sleep an additional person on a comfortable sofa bed.

The house lived up to its description of having spectacular views of the Tuscan countryside. It is situated half way up the hillside in the vineyard,making the approach unsuitable for cars without a reasonable ground clearance, but our hired Golf had no problem. We received a warm welcome and Jane and her husband had provided everything we could possibly require to enjoy our holiday, right down to the timetable for the train into Florence. The house is beautifully restored and has very comfortable accommodation and every mod. con. Jane and her family live in an adjacent property and Pontassieve is only about 10 minutes away so although the property has its unique setting, there is no feeling of remoteness.

We spent a week in peace and in privacy.

The accommodation was exactly as described and very comfortable. The owners are there if you need them but they also respect your privacy.

Florence was 20 minutes by train from Pontassieve but there is so much more to see in the hills of eastern Tuscany. Despite soarling temperatures in town the hills offered cooling breezes away from the crowds.
