Places of Interest: Mont Canigou - this mountain peak, although not the highest of the eastern Pyrénées, is a mystical and mythical mountain for the Catalans. Can be climbed from mid-May by landrover / 4x4 or two hours on foot. Villefranche-de-Conflent - an historic town surrounded by defensive walls is a fort built by Louis Vauban in the 17th century and is well worth a visit. Fort Liberia looks down on the fortified town and there is a connecting tunnel between the two. Mont Louis - another fortified town, higher up into the mountains with superb views over the foothills as they descend to the Mediterranean. Near to Mont Louis is the 'Fort Solar' - one of the largest solar powered electricity stations in Europe, with its own visitor centre. Not too far away is the Fort of Salses constructed in the 15th century, or take a visit to Carcassonne a fortified city in Cathar country.

Activities: Excellent walking and hiking country. There are two Randonnées (or signposted footpaths) that pass the front door. Ask at the local Syndicat d'Initiative or tourist office in Olette. Walking maps are available in bookshops, 'tabacs' and petrol stations. Trout fishing in the stream in front of the house (permit available at the 'tabac' in Olette) or the fishing lake near Olette. A full range of watersports (sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving) take place all along the Vermeille coast (Canet Plage etc) and there is also windsurfing on the mountain lakes at Les Angles. There are many excellent restaurants in Prades, Villefranche, Thuir, Vernet-les-Bains, Port Vendres, Céret etc as well as wonderful village bars serving simple 'family' meals. Try the Auberge de Jujols for spectacular views over the valley - but make sure that you call to book a table first! After skiiing or a visit to the mountains, try one of many excellent restaurants / hotels in Font Romeu - all types of cuisine and a full range of prices from the simple to the simply luxurious! If you are desperate for fast food, there is even a McDonald's in Prades! But the pizza vans are much better quality and value!

Ski: There are nine ski stations within an hour's drive of the house. The largest & nearest is the resort of Font Romeu with its ice rink, numerous ski lifts, snow guns and a skiable route suitable for all to Pyrénées 2000, another ski station. We had a great time in Thuir d’Evol.

Review Submitted: July 26, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
Thank you for the use of your house in Thuir d’Evol. We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed it. The views from the bedroom windows when you wake up are lovely. We have written some notes in your visitors’ book for the benefit of people following us.

We managed to drive both the road up to the Chalet des Cortales (Canigou) and the road up to Col de Portus (from Thuir d’Evol). In both cases we also enjoyed the wonderful walks from the car parks.

In addition we have enjoyed a wine tasting day, explored the immediate surroundings including Evol, the old chapel and ruined castle and up the track above the house; used the yellow train to get to Mont Louis to view the solar furnace, a great walk from Jujols; visited the Priory at Serrabonne; dined in La Vigatane in Canet village (recommended); visited the abbey of Saint Michel de Cuxa; explored Villefranche and walked up to view Fort Liberia; walked the Gorge de la Carança, visited Castelnou; visited Vernet les Bains and Casteil and walked up to the Abbey of St Martin le Canigou.

We had very good journeys each way, we made very good time, and actually arrived earlier than I had originally estimated.

Once again, thank you very much for use of the lovely house.
Owner's Response: This guest and his family had a great time at the house - making full use of the opportunity to visit local sites and explore the surrounding countryside. The house is also ideal for those who simply want to get away from it all and enjoy the peaceful countryside - sunbathe, paint, fish or just sit and snooze! You can also drive down to the beaches of the Mediterranean or enjoy the ski resorts in winter. If you do plan to drive up some of the more "challenging" mountain roads, then we would recommend a 4x4 vehicle or something with a relatively high ground clearance (either your own or sign up with a local guided tour vehicle).

Enjoyable break

This house is in a great location, particularly for walkers and those wanting to gain a proper experience of rural France. The property has loads of character and is very spacious. The neighbours are really friendly, so please don't be afraid to try out your French (if it's not your native tongue!).
There are plenty of places to visit within an hour or so by car.

We all had a really good week at Thuir D'Evol

Review Submitted: August 2, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
It really is a beautiful spot. The house suited our needs well, and despite the lack of glasses we took full advantage of the great local wines and lovely French produce!

We followed the circular walk from the house, which was great, but challenging on a hot day, as well as several others in the area. We particularly liked Vernet-les-Bains, walking up to St. Martin-du Canigou, and to the waterfalls
nearby.

The coast was also a treat, the beaches were delightful.
Owner's Response: Thanks for letting us know that more glasses were needed - this has been done. Vernet-les-Bains is a spa town where you can book various treatments for a range of medical conditions. But for a more informal (and cheaper!) spa experience, we would recommend St Thomas-les-Bains (near Fontpedrouse) with its two outdoor spa pools which are fed directly from the hot springs, its steam room complex, massage and beauty treatment rooms. As well as the beaches of the Mediterranean, its also worth visiting the old fishing villages such as Port Vendres and Collioure with their great sea-food restaurants.
