Photos and Description of this Lesbos holiday cottage Recently renovated two storey stone built house, 3 bedrooms, sleeps 6-8.

The cottage is an old stone built house with two floors. It has recently been renovated and care has been taken to retain original features wherever possible. Downstairs consists of a comfortable living area, a dining area, a well equipped kitchen area and the bathroom. All the walls are stone and there’s a wood burning stove should it prove necessary. This area is wonderfully cool in summer and warm in winter! Upstairs, you’ll find the 3 bedrooms, all with pine floors and sloping pine timbered ceilings.

Drota beach, a mix of pebbles and coarse sand, is a 5 min drive away, though it’s also a very pleasant walk. It's wonderfully quiet. There's a little old cafe where you can get something to drink. The mountain village of Akrasi is 5 kms away up an unmade road (you'll need to enjoy off-road driving!!). Here you will find traditional Greek coffee houses with some basic food. The nearest real centre with banks, supermarkets, restaurants etc. is at Plomari, a beautiful 40 minute drive from the cottage. Vatera, a long sandy beach with tavernas and night life, is about a 30 minute drive, partly on unmade roads. Natural history fans should pay a visit to the museum of Vrissa not far from Vatera. The capital of Lesvos, Mytilene, is about an hour’s drive from Drota. Lesvos has numerous natural hot springs, the waters of which are deemed to cure virtually every ailment you can imagine! Details on request. The island is also home to a well preserved fossilized forest - the only one in Europe.

Further details for this holiday cottage rental on Lesbos, Greece

The cottage is self catering but a Welcome Pack of breakfast things will be provided. Also, please feel free to help yourself to our stock of wine! Mains electricity. No land line. Signal for mobiles is poor in the village itself but cardphone and good signal down at the beach. Kitchen has a 3-ring gas burner as well as a small oven with 3 electric hot plates on top.

There are no roads into this remote village! You park under the shady plane tree and then walk! Our cottage is about 75 yards in. Although we have no garden per se you can sit directly outside the house as the path widens here creating a lovely area to sit and relax. In the summer, the few permanent inhabitants move down to live by the sea so you may well have the place to yourselves! Other people in the village will be those who, like us, fell in love with the place, bought a house there and did it up so there’s a wonderful sense of community spirit as everyone’s looking for the same thing- peace and quiet in a beautiful setting. The village has two churches (one is tiny!) and all the houses are old so it has retained its original character. In winter months, a brook runs under the little wooden bridge as it makes its way down the valley to the sea. Why not take a look for yourself on Google Earth?

If you look on Google Earth, Drota appears clearly midway between Plomari and Vrissa and is marked as Drota, Akrasi, Lesvos view. Our house is in the small hamlet due north of the beach by a big bend in the road, well before the hairpin bends. There are charter flights direct to Lesvos from London and Manchester (on Thursdays and Saturdays). Alternatively, you can fly into Athens and take a ferry (most of which travel overnight so you arrive the next morning) or hop on another flight from Athens to Lesvos (lots of them).

Other Activities: Painting (easel provided on request)

Beautiful, lonesome and raw

Rasmus Copenhagen, Denmark
Review Submitted: November 7, 2008 Date of Stay: October 2008
I stayed in the house in Drota in the middle of October, and the weather was clear and hot, sometimes almost too hot to go out, which was fine because I came there to find peace to write. The house is situated in a deserted village in a valley, and the rest of the village is mostly holiday houses so I spent my entire week almost completely solo, only talking to the stray donkeys, dogs, and cats. I must admit that it was a bit challenging to be so much on my own, so if you are the scarable type, don't go there on your own in October. But if you are looking for a meditative or romantic place with great walking opportunities in the surrounding hills or by the ocean, this is a great place. The nature is a bit raw and dry, but very beautiful. One day I also took a walk to the nearest village, Akrasi, wherefrom I hitch-hiked to the hot baths in Polichnitos. This was a great experience! The local villagers in Akrasi were extremely helpful and so was Hilary, the English woman who owns the house together with her family. All in all a great and fulfilling experience.

Really lonesome greek holidays

Review Submitted: October 2, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
We have rentad surely more than 30 times a house for our holidays - but Hilary was the best Host we`ver had. She lokked for everything! Rent-a-car, vine and food in the house, overnight-stay in Mitilini...
The place is really quite, 5 Minutes to reach a very beautiful coast, the house has everything, what you can expect from a real Greek house.
Thanks to Hilary!

This cottage is a great place to stay for peace and time for total relaxation.
The cottage itself is well maintained , clean and cool in the summer months.
Hilary the owner is a very friendly, helpful, full of information .Hilary can also help with car rental which was a great help.
The beach at Drota, about 1.3 kms or 10mins brisk walk, is absolutely beautiful. The local villagers at the beach itself are very friendly.
The nearby main village at Akrasi is also worth a visit to the main square. The people there are also very freindly and love to talk.
In all our stay on Lesvos was a very pleasant one with making many new friends.

Lesvos at its best

Peter & Monique Netherlands
Review Submitted: August 13, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
The cottage is an excellent base for those who dislike mass-tourisme. A situation that will not change because the entrance towards the small village is down an unmade road (about 20 minutes).
The cottage is very well equipped and tastefully furnished. The more or less private beach is at a distance of about 10 minutes walking.
Hilary, the owner, is a cordial hostess who looks after her guests if necessary.
Our youngest daughter (14 years old) imagined a future holiday with some friends in the cottage!
In short, we enjoyed our stay in Drota very much.

2 heavenly weeks

Kev & Anna Herefordshire. UK
Review Submitted: June 30, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
This is an excellent place to stay if you love peace and quiet, it's well off the beaten tourist trap. it's in a beautiful location situated in a ravine down an unmade track. If you don't like off road driving then this is not for you!

We just spent 2 weeks here 12th June 08 - 26th June 08 with the rest of my family of 4. The house is well maintained and clean, 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and a open plan kitchen and dining/sitting area, also a bbq area outside, we all had plenty of space. Due to the thickness of the stone walls it remained cool even though the outside temp. was 38c.

The owner is very friendly and helpful, everything was provided for, even on my Sons Birthday she went out of her way to bring him a cake and balloons!

I would recommend this house to anyone who enjoys peace and tranquillity. Lesvos is a beautiful Island and great to explore. I can honestly say that this is the best place we have stayed on Lesvos.
