Stunning views from historic Grasmere cottage on Wordsworth's favourite walk

Brockstone Grasmere Cottage is a special place to stay in the Lake District.
The Lake District has been designated a Unesco World Heritage site. What better place to be! You can read our blog for up to date information about current events and for tips about how to get the best out of your stay at Brockstone Grasmere Cottage.
We are fully booked for most of 2021, but we do have a couple of weeks available in November 2021. Occasionally we may get cancellations which we post on our Facebook page. We are now taking bookings for 2022.

The location of the cottage is interesting. If you've ever walked along the famous Wordsworth Walk from Dove Cottage, Grasmere to Rydal Village, you'll have gone right by . In her recent TV programme "Best 100 walks in Britain" Julia Bradbury made the walk from Grasmere to Rydal her 27th top walk in the whole of the UK. This walk goes right past the door of Brockstone Grasmere Cottage.
Our cottage is called Brockstone, from the old word "brock" meaning badger. You may see badgers, red squirrels, deer, buzzards.....you are surrounded by nature.
Perched high on a Lakeland hillside with views over Rydal to the Coniston Fells this romantic famous 200 year old cottage is many people's ideal Grasmere holiday cottage.

New for 2021- our master bedroom now has a super king sized bed and an award winning Emma mattress. With its high beamed ceiling and wonderful views this is a delightful room.
The second bedroom has twin beds and a sink, with lots of cupboard space in the built in wardrobes.
All the beds are made up with 100% high thread count Egyptian cotton sheets. All bed have feather duvets. Extra blankets are provided. Big fluffy towels.
The family bathroom has a spa bath with a power shower over the bath. Guests tell us that relaxing in the spa bath ( maybe with a glass of wine) after a long day walking the Lakeland fells is just heavenly.

The ground floor was recently totally refurbished. The lounge has two new sofas, a log burning stove, TV, DVD/CD player, ipod dock. There is a bookcase full of interesting reading. Chess and jigsaws are provided too. See our website brockstonegrasmere.co.uk. for more details and extra photos.
The new kitchen has a built in Bosch Oven, hob and washer dryer. There is also a built in dishwasher, microwave and extractor fan. We have a lovely retro Smeg fridge freezer.
There is an antique pine dining table.

The ground floor opens onto the terrace, and all the rooms have great views.

Outside is one of the sunniest terraces in the Lakes. As our holiday cottage is perched high up on a hillside, facing south, it gets the maximum sun even in winter when houses in the valleys are shaded from the sun by the mountains.
It's a real treat to relax in the sun at the end of an active day, gazing over the Lakeland hills at the views that have inspired generations of artists.
On the terrace is a large dining table, four chairs with soft seat covers, and there is a barbecue and sun umbrella stored in the outhouse.
There is private parking for two cars.
The cottage is at the end of a track, beyond which there is only a footpath. No traffic can pass by.
Situated on the beautiful 'Wordsworth Walk' from Dove Cottage Grasmere to Rydal, with car access by private track, only walkers pass by.

Lake District Walking: Brockstone Cottage is the perfect base for a walking holiday in the Lake District. Located on the famous 'Wordsworth Walk', also known as the ancient 'coffin road' from Rydal to Grasmere, step out of the door and go! Gentle walks lead to Rydal and Ambleside, round Rydal Water and Grasmere Lake, to Grasmere Village, with stops for a pub lunch.Go along Loughrigg Terrace ( where Rene Zellweger filmed Miss Potter ) to Elterwater (pub lunch at the Brittania!) or over Silver Howe or Loughrigg for great views. For high level walks, Nab Scar and the Fairfield Horseshoe , ( over 3,000 feet) a classic circular Lakeland mountain walk, start from Brockstone Cottage. The Coniston Fells and Langdale Pikes can be seen from Brockstone Terrace, Helvellyn is a short drive. We are happy to advise and lend maps and books. The many walking shops in the area offer a huge range of equipment at all prices. At the end of the day, relax in the spa bath and watch the sunset over the Lake District Mountains.

We know that many of of guests love to bring their dog on their walking holiday to the Lakes, and a well behaved dog is welcome. We ask that dogs do not climb on the furniture and that they stay downstairs. Owners are responsible for their dogs at all times.

In Grasmere there are places to eat at all levels, including the amazing Michelin Starred Forest Side. Splendid cottage in the Lakes
We spent a wonderful week at Brockstone Cottage. It's very comfortable and well equipped, totally isolated, peaceful and quiet, but an easy walk to Grasmere Village (though the walk back up the hill is a bit harder than going down!). The views from the cottage are splendid -- Rydal Water, Loughrigg, and more mountains in the distance. The interplay of light, clouds, and rain is beautiful. We had to cancel our visit twice before because of Covid, but the wait was absolutely worthwhile. Thanks to Sue for being so accommodating as we were forced to change our plans. We loved our visit and hope to be able to return.

Perfect!
This is a real gem of a holiday home, and we feel very lucky to have stayed at Brockstone. The house is really cute, was immaculately clean and well equipped. The views from the patio are breath-taking and such a treat. It has been a privilege to visit! Thank you for having us.

About the host

We have lived at White Moss House , 10 minutes walk away from the cottage, for nearly 40 years. White Moss House was a highly rated small hotel and restaurant, with top entries in the Good Food Guide for many years, before we retired. We used Brockstone Cottage as an extra hotel room- it was very popular.
In recent years we have taken it more easy, so White Moss now is our home, and we rent Brockstone Cottage, Grasmere as a wonderful place to spend your Lake District holiday.
We are nearby should you need any help, but respect your privacy throughout your stay. Usually we just see guests when they collect the keys and drop them off, but we are very happy to advise on walks, activities, tips, where to go- anything to make your stay at Brockstone Cottage as perfect as possible. I write blogs about the Lake District, things to do and see, and current events, which you can find easily online, via White Moss House or Brockstone Grasmere cottage.

Why they chose this property

If you've seen the views, you'll know why this is such a wonderful place to stay. Sitting on the terrace, watching the changing weather over towards Wetherlam or Rydal Water is just fabulous. One day we would like to retire to Brockstone!

Many places in the Lake District are tucked away down the valleys, and in the villages, where very little sun reaches. Brockstone Cottage is high enough to get all the sun available. This special cottage has a large terrace, with dining table and chairs for eating outside at lunchtime or on a long summer's evening. The cottage is surrounded by a wild garden, with a stream running under the house.
Inside there are all the modern facilities you need for a comfortable holiday in the Lakes.
The Lake District has been designated a Unesco World Heritage site.
For more photos, reviews and information you can look at our website.

What makes this property unique

There is no passing traffic. Only deer, sheep, red squirrels and walkers pass by. At the end of a hard day's walking ( you can start at the door) soak tired limbs in a spa bath. Heaven!
From the door of the cottage you can set out on walks and hikes in all directions. Some guests never use their car at all, apart from the odd trip to the shops.
If you do want to explore further afield, the location of Brockstone Cottage is very central .
We welcome a well behaved dog .
