Further details for this holiday barn rental in Asturias, Spain

Villaviciosa Golf Course: We are only 8km from Villaviciosa Golf. Please, do not hesitate to contact owner for more details and website link with further information. Tazones is a small fishing village famous in these parts not only for its daily catch of fresh fish but also its picturesque setting. One not to be missed, especially on a Sunday when booking in advance is recommended as the Spanish dress up in their finery and go out en masse to enjoy a really old fashioned family day. If fish is not your thing, there are several very good restaurants around, with a Menu del Dia starting at a mere 7 euro for three courses, house wine and bread! The fabada, a local bean and bacon stew and the locally brewed cider (sidra), for which Villaviciosa is famous, are not to be missed. Neither are some of the local patisseries who bake daily on site.

Skiing: The ski slopes at Leon are an hour and a half! However, if skiing is not your thing or it is simply out of season, then why not try one of the many adventure sports which are readily available in these parts. Also, a short car ride will also take you to Asturcon riding stables where you can book a short course for any ability, they may even be able to accommodate those with special needs.

The Dinosaur Coast!: Visit the local beaches with real dinosaur fossilised footprints and visit the local museum at Lastres, a short distance from us by car. Rodiles, a truly spectacular and natural beach (no kiss me quick hats here), in particular has very good access with fully decked walkways all the way to the sand, shaded picnic areas and many disabled parking bays. It is also the home to a surfing school, lessons and board hire available. Alternatively why not try your hand at canoeing on the estuary at El Puntal. Or visit Oviedo's enormous indoor children's park with indoor train rides, rock walls to climb, submarines to discover to name but a few of its attractions! See our website for more information.

Other Activities: Go Karting, Bird Watching, Camino de Santiago walk, bike hire, indoor play area in fact most adventure activities are very close by.

Mountain Retreat

Rob and Mireya Staplehurst Kent UK
Review Submitted: April 7, 2009 Date of Stay: March 2009
We had a lovely two weeks at Casa Lavender with great weather. It was very sunny and clear during the day, which made the exceptional views even better. The nights were chilly, but we had a wood burning stove with plenty of wood and coal to supplement the electric heaters. One of the most enjoyable experiences after a day out was to watch the sun go down behind the mountains from the guest garden and then go in to light the fire.

Siobhan and Matthew were very helpful and were always ready to answer questions about local attractions e.g. local markets and shops. There is a very good market in the attractive town of Pola de Siero on Tuesdays and a street market selling clothes in Villaviciosa on Wednesdays.

The property is extremely well equipped and comfortable and very well situated to see the area, mountains and beaches. Oviedo and Leon, particularly the Cathedrals are well worth seeing, as is the sanctuary of Cavadonga in the Picos de Europa. We went on the back road to Cavadonga via Infiesto and took in Cangas de Onis with its Roman Bridge. Nava not far off this route is also an interesting town and you will also see the the Romanesque Church of San Julian

Ribadesella on the Coast is an attractive town and the fishing port of Tazones is a great place to have lunch at one of the quayside restaurants. Out of the beaches the local one, Playa de Rodiles is worth a visit

I would certainly recommend Casa Lavender and hope to go back one day soon..
Owner's Response: Some lovely comments on our holiday home and the area, thank you and please do come again!!!

Fantastic base to explore a beautiful area

Pastora Barcelona, Spain
Review Submitted: August 30, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
We spent a great week at Casa Lavender and found Siobhan a very helpful "landlady" both in advance and during our stay. The property has been renovated very tastefully and is very comfortable, and the location is perfect to explore Asturias. We'd certainly recommend it to friends, whether abroad or based in Spain (like us).
This is a beautiful part of Spain with small towns, larger historic cities (Oviedo and Gijón), beautiful coastline and also hills and mountains, all in easy reach of the house. One of the things that appealed to me about the house when I started looking was its location giving easy access to a variety of sights (incl. cities for possible wet-weather days). It was fantastic because you don't always have to drive the same stretch of road to set off on a day-trip (it's happened to us in the past, the same 18km drive along a valley every time). Shops and amenities in Villaviciosa are just a short drive away and the scenery is varied and beautiful in all directions starting with the view over the valley from the kitchen and the garden.
We loved the small towns and villages on the coast like Tazones, Lastres and Ribadesella, enjoyed exploring Asturias's industrial heritage at the mining museum in El Entrego while the Cider Museum in Nava shed light on the importance of cider in the customs of Asturias.
There is even a UNESCO World Heritage site literally just down the road at Valdedios. We visited it the first day and then over the week went to the other pre-Romanesque churches in the area (incl. 3 in Oviedo) which were grouped in the same UNESCO designation.
For architecture fans there is also the chance to catch 2 of Gaudi´s buildings a long way from Catalonia but not so far from Asturias as they are in Leon and Astorga, a fairly easy day-trip on the motorway through the mountains.
The food was incredible, served in incredibly generous portions too. And always cider if you wanted. I loved the stuffed onions which is a speciality of El Entrego and of course the mountain stews, fabada and other warming fare. These dishes reflect the fact that Asturias's climate isn't that different from the South West of England with the result also that you see lots of hydrangeas as well as the odd yucca and palm. So remember to pack like you would for a holiday in Cornwall rather than on the Med! You may get beach weather or you may not. But there's plenty to do whatever the weather.
Owner's Response: Our first "Spanish" guests, we are so glad that Casa Lavender and Asturias were so agreeable to you. Lots of handy hints and tips for future guests, Thank You!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY

Running Dad Bromley, Greater London
Review Submitted: August 27, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2007
A very warm welcome awaited us and the owners were very helpful, explaining how everything worked and local places of interest to visit. They even included a few bottles of the locally bottled cider for us to enjoy!! The accommodatoin is extremely clean and comfortable and decorated tastefully and thoughtfully. The area of Asturias is really beautiful with some breathtaking beauty spots. There is lots to do both in the local area and further afield. The beaches are lovely and sandy and clean. The nearest town Villaviciosa whilst maintaining old world spanish charm and architecture is nicely bustling and very cosmopolitan! You will find everything you need there, cuisines for all tastes and budgets (including extremely cheap hairdressers and beauty salons on par with anything you will find in the west end of London!) All in all a very happy and memorable holiday and I have no hesitation recommending Casa Lavander to anyone. We will certainly be booking again. Ideal for couples and families.
Owner's Response: Wow, thank you, what a great review of our holiday home and the area we love.

Would def go again

Review Submitted: August 26, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
Lovely clean property with stunning views and friendly owners. Off the beaten track which is just what we were looking for, not a beer swilling union-jack-short-wearing lout in sight, and plenty to do around the region. Need a car to make the most of whats on offer, lovely beaches not too far away.
Owner's Response: Happy clients are what we are striving to achieve here at Casa Lavender, positive feedback like this makes all the effort worthwhile!
