Alghero can be visited at any time of year. The old Catalan city dates back to Aragonese rule in the fourteenth century although some maintain the town’s origins go back to the eleventh century. In addition to white sandy beaches, beautiful Mediterranean vegetation with protected natural areas, there are sites of archaeological interest such as the Nuraghe of Palmavera (ancient megalithic-age dwellings), the Necropolis of Anghelu Ruju, or the Grottoes of Neptune with caverns revealing a delicate lacework of stalactites and stalagmites. Many cultural events are held in Alghero during the summer season and year-round in the nearby city of Sassari only a short half hour away.
