Ballinskelligs means 'the town of the Skelligs'. When the monks left the monastery at Skellig Mhichil (est. in the 6th century) they built a new abbey in Ballinskelligs (12th or 13th century), the ruins of which you may still visit.
If you are feeling more energetic, you may wish to contact Ballinskelligs Watersports (+353 (0) 669479182). You may choose a day trip by boat to the Skellig Islands, and do some diving or sea angling. The day trip lands at Skellig Island for 2 hrs. approx. A non-landing trip around the island leaves at 3.30 p.m. each afternoon in July and August. Sea angling and high speed adventure trips to the Skelligs are also on offer, taking 25 mins. approx. each way.
A 45 min. (approx) scenic drive along the rugged coastline of the Ring of Kerry brings you to the Derrynane. Here more water sports for beginners and the more experienced are available.
