Historic manor-house under the Etna volcano in Sicily.

Built in the early 1700's in the village of Mascalucia on the slopes of Etna, 15 km from Catania, Borgopetra is a villa enclosing an elegant inner court, protected as a historic property: an oasis of peace in an ancient urban setting. The street, Via Teatro, takes its name from the old warehouse which was used as a puppet theatre. Transformed into an attractive leisure space with gym and massage rooms, the Theatre looks onto a garden of fruit trees surrounding the swimming pool. Gathered around the courtyard like houses on a tiny piazza, the four romantic guest apartments are managed as self-catering units or as a b&b. The lava-stone windows look onto orchards and gardens. Special attention is paid to comfort and the quality of sleep. Stocked with the basic ingredients, the tiny kitchens are traditional sicilian masonwork, decorated with old tiles. The fascinating furnishings and ornaments testify to a life of travel for work and for pleasure. The owners live on the site.

In the southern wing of the manor-house, the Baron’s Apartment (113 square meters) sleeps up to 8 people. It consists of two extra-large bedrooms each with one double bed (or two single beds) and a sofa bed, the Red Room that can be used as a bedroom (two single beds) or as a dining room, two bathrooms (one with facilities for the disabled) and a small kitchen. Furnishings are antique and the decor is fascinating. Enjoy the privacy and silence of your rooms or of your small private garden, or the company of other guests in the courtyard, in the Theatre gym or by the swimming pool. Breakfast is served in the owners’ dining room or in the courtyard. Parking, air conditioning, TV, heating, daily maid service.

Borgopetra is an ideal base for excursions. To Europe's highest active volcano. To Catania, its Baroque churches and the fish market. To the Ionia coast with delightful fishing villages or the beaches of Fiumefreddo and Taormina (40 minutes by motorway). To the south you will be enchanted by the changing landscape, the gleaming limestone of Syracuse, rich in history, 45 minutes from Catania, fabulous sights like the necropolis of Pantalica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, the beaches of Vendicari and, inland, the age-old Ragusa countryside with Modica and Ibla.

The kitchen is traditional sicilian masonwork, decorated with old tiles. It is tiny, but lovely and well- appointed and stocked with the basic ingredients: extra-virgin olive oil from Etna, aromatics from the herb garden, salt and sugar, coffee, tea and infusions, organic jams and honeys.
