Family-friendly farmhouse and detached studio, set in 3 acres of garden and vineyard (producing Vinho Verde, the famous regional wine). Just inland from the local fishing town of Vila Praia de Ancora, a series of cobbled lanes wind their way to the villa, which has far-reaching views across a picturesque rural landscape and towards the coast. There is a patio area under the vines, with BBQ area. There is a pool for sole use of guests (June-Sept). The MAIN FARMHOUSE (sleeps 6/8), is a traditional old house for the region, newly modernized, with the accommodation on the first floor - the ground floor provides a laundry room and the traditional wine cellar. Dining kitchen with seating for 10, and lounge with a panoramic window with outstanding views. There are 3 bedrooms: 2 double (one en-suite), a bunk bed room, and sofa bed. The house bathroom has a freestanding shower and bath. The DETACHED STUDIO (sleeps 2) has a double bed, sofa, shower room and kitchen.

Less than 10 minutes drive to beautiful clean and very quiet beaches. There are a couple of Surf schools at the local beach. Visit the beautiful Santa Luzia Chrurch on the hill overlooking Viana Do Castelo, which has view of the Atlantic coast - described as the one of the best views in the world by National Geographic. Fabulous markets at Vila Nova de Cerveira, Viana Do Castelo and Caminha. Wonderful countryside for walking (Sunflower Northern Portugal book has numerous walks within easy driving distance). Visit the Peneda-Geres National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty, where you may spot the endangered royal eagle or catch a glimpse of an otter. Follow the Vinho Verde wine trail along the banks of the Minho Valley which passes between undulating hills covered with the vines which produce the lightly sparkling and very tasty wine of the region.

Notes: Having three children ourselves, the house is very child friendly. There is a high chair, cot, potty, toddler toilet seat, pushchair, child gate, baby monitor, training cups, children DVDs, a toy box, and a ready bed. Children can safely explore the gardens, hunting for the various fruits (picking oranges and making fresh juice is one of our children favorite activities). Depending on season there are apple trees, lemon, orange, chestnut, plums, Sharon fruit, ETC... The detached studio provides an ideal haven for grandparents, which is totally self-contained but still within close proximity to the house.

For use by guests: There is a travel cot, high chair, pushchair, and toddler toilet seat. There is also a selection of English speaking children's DVDs. There is an CD Player, with IPOD docking station in the kitchen. For surfing at the local beaches, there is a wet suit, a boogy board, and a Malibu surfboard for use by guests, again at no extra charge.

Garden: The property has 3 acres of mature gardens and vines. Guests can explore the gardens; relax in the shade under the vines. The farmhouse has a spacious cobbled courtyard, patio area under the vines providing BBQ area with table, chairs, and umbrella for eating out. There is also an above ground pool for sole use of guests (available from May to September). The Ancora river is less than 5 minutes walk, with a 'secret swimming spot' for the locals in the summer providing crystal clear waters which is great for swimming. In the autumn guests are more than welcome to help with the grape harvest/winemaking.

Local area and getting there: The nearest beaches are less than five minute drive away in Vila Praia de Ancora, where a wide range of shops, restaurants, and a daily fresh fish market can also be found. Afife beach is less than 3km, and has an excellent seaside restaurant, surf hire and lessons, and lifeguard. It also has a freshwater lagoon (safe and warm for children). Moledo beach is upmarket and chic. The nearest airport is Oporto (Porto) which is less than an one hours drive (80 km) mostly on motorway. Oporto is served by budget airline RyanAir which flies from Stansted, Liverpool, Bristol and Birmingham (from June 08). RyanAir also fly to Santiago de Compostela in Spain which is about 140km to the north. TAP flies from Heathrow to Oporto. Car hire is essential. Oporto airport is well-served by car hire companies.

Golf: There is a golf course in Ponta de Lima, approx 30 minutes drive.

A really wonderful property

We had a wonderful family holiday here with our 3 children in April 09 and everything exceeded our expectations on arrival. Property was in a beautiful setting, with everything needed on hand to enjoy your home away from home. Location was perfect for staying local and taking it easy or for access to other busier routes and we enjoyed some of both during the week.
Layout, design and decor of the property is superb and the grounds were lovely for adults and kids alike. We've hired private accommodation previously and found a number of basic items were always lacking, but not here. Everything was on hand to aid a wonderful week in lovely Praia d'Ancora. Local area was typically Portugese which was lovely and a change from the commercial sides we often see of other countries and the neighbours were very welcoming and friendly.
We will visit again and will recommend our friends and family to stay at this marvellous accommodation.

July 2008 - great holiday

We had a great time staying in this villa in July 2008. There is pelnty of room for two families of 3 (two children 5 and 8). The villa is well-equipped with life saving devices such as DVD player, washing machine and dish washer. The garedn is enormous and very inviting- on some hot days, we had everything we wanted- pool, vine-covered terrace- and didn't even make it to the beach!
Great base to explore the North Portugal Coast and even venture out into Spain- our favourite nearby resorts were Vila Praia de Ancora and Caminha.
Popped down to the local cafe everyday for fresh rolls and to enjoy the walk itself, across the stream and past the old stone walls and beautiful flowers. The shallow river is a great natural play area for the kids too.
Medieval market in Caminha towards the end of July was great- don't know oif it's a regular occurence.
And the restaurant there on the corner of the main road turn-off to the beach with view over the harbour is romantic and great value for money.
The villa has a cosy lounge to go back to after a day out and sample the delights of vinho Verde.
The guest book is a mine of information.

Paradise Found!

What a find! This was the perfect holiday for our family. We wanted something relaxing, different, comfortable, spacious, safe, peaceful, interesting and easy to reach. We found all this and much more!

The house, village and Coste Verde were all just perfect. We had 2 weeks in June and have booked for 2 more weeks in September, can’t wait!

It is not easy to find a holiday that suits a variety of needs, but the Farmhouse and Studio, near Vila Praia de Ancora did just that. The house is stylish and well equipped the grounds and pool perfect for lazing, swimming and outdoor eating (barbecuing). Our son (3) loved adventuring and picking oranges in the grounds.

We enjoyed the local walking, river (great swimming and fishing) and village bar (all within 5 min walk). Say hello to Aurelia at the bar which is great value!

The local beaches and coast line are stunning and un-crowded; even so, most beeches have a small bar, toilets, first aid and life guards. The surf is good but there are plenty of deep rock pools or Ancora beech is good for gentler bathing.

Venture along the coastline from Porto to Viana de Costello (my favourite) and through to Tui in Spain, you’ll find beautiful villages, beaches and places of interest which are traditional, friendly and unspoilt.



If you like a full cooked English breakfast and roast dinner every day, you'd probably prefer Benidorm (unless you can cook your own)!
