Chania Town: The focal point of Western Crete is the handsome town of Chania with its bustling covered market, fascinating old quarter steeped in history and the remarkable, picturesque Venetian harbour where dining by night at one of the many tavernas and soaking up the almost medieval atmosphere is an unforgettable experience. The town also has many modern shops and a number of supermarkets as well as numerous small bars and a few sophisticated night-clubs. Beyond the harbour is a good sandy beach fringed by some excellent fish tavernas. A regular bus service makes it easy to reach a greater choice of beaches a few miles west of the town. Chania is an ideal centre from which to explore Western Crete and to walk the famous Samaria Gorge.
